Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to King Judah. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
King, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I have always been a firm believer that we are all bestowed gifts from YHWH the Most-High and we thrive when we lean into what makes us unique. It’s easy to get lost into the commonalities and stigmas to which society considers a standard. More often than not, it is acceptable to fall in line with these attributes rather than searching for originality within us. Therefore, creating an identity crisis. My experience with this peaked while in college. Coming from one of the most urban neighborhoods in the nation where the population predominantly looks like me to attending a university where there were other ethnicities that outnumbered those like me was a reality check that I didn’t know I needed. It was during this phase of my life that I learned in order to be successful in this world, there’s a few things that have to take place internally starting with acceptance. Acknowledging the fact that you’re different opens the door for one to begin to live truthfully. Then and only then, can one begin to elevate to unimaginable heights.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Peace & Blessings brothers and sisters! My name is King Judah, I’m a professional actor currently based in Atlanta, GA. For me, acting has a special place in my heart. It has served as an outlet for my emotional needs. The process of breaking down a script line by line in order to create a character is exhilarating at the least. It’s therapeutic. Not to mention having the opportunity to live a multitude of lives. Such an environment forces one to use their imagination to the best of their abilities. To quote Sanford Meisner, “acting is behaving truthfully under imaginary circumstances.” What makes all of this special is the fact that acting is the bridge that connects our adulthood to our childhood.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My acting journey has been filled with moments of joy and moments of uncertainty. Despite the adversities, I learned that possessing the following qualities were most impactful to my growth: Patience, Consistency, and Faith. Without unwavering faith, you can’t be patient and without patience, you won’t ever be consistent. My best advice to give to anyone in any situation is to never lose faith in God, especially in your moments of self-doubt. In order to develop that trait, it takes discipline and that only comes when you practice over time.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of improvement this year is without a doubt my ability to stay consistent. I was able to lock in and focus on bettering my craft (i.e: acting methods, script breakdown techniques, script memorization, etc) which made an exponential difference in all other areas of my acting career.
