We recently connected with Sherri Starr & Jessie Cox and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sherri Starr &, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
You know that feeling when you walk into a room and everyone is staring at you?
Yeah, we don’t like it either.
And yet, somehow, it happens to us all the time. When we enter a room, people tend to stop what they’re doing and pay attention—and it’s not because we’re really loud or anything (okay, maybe sometimes). We just have this weird ability to stand out in a crowd.
So what makes us so… different? It’s actually pretty simple: People can tell that we genuinely care about what they do. Not only are they impressed by how much we know about their industry; they’re also impressed by how much they want to help them succeed. And that’s because our passion for our work never fades away—even when we’re not working!
But beyond that, we know we also look a little different than most.
Most commanding business owners we meet are men. As women, and a business duo, we’re incredibly synchronized (put us on the opposite sides of the room, and we’d still give the same answers). And when we talk about what we do, people can see our passion and our generosity.
We’re not afraid to break the rules and do things differently. Our business is based around years of being in the coaching industry and noticing that there was tons of advice to go around with very little done for you action to back it up. So we made that happen.
After all, when you say there is a need, that’s what you should base your business on. And people usually say, “Wow, I’ve never heard anyone who does that!”
We’re effective and successful BECAUSE we’re different breaking the rules.
While others in business may lose their passion and get stuck in robot syndrome, we keep our playfulness and generosity and are always there to serve. So, when you see us in the room, get ready to witness something truly unique and special.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
It seems crazy that coaches, consultants, and experts are expected to build, run, and grow their businesses all by themselves. Just because you CAN do everything, doesn’t mean you should.
As a business coach for nearly a decade, I’ve consistently heard the same thing from my clients about their past experiences…
❌Cookie cutter approaches for all their clients, no matter how different their business needs are
❌Direction without follow through support
❌How-to services, not done-for-you services, that end up leaving you feeling like just another number on their impersonal Zoom calls
So why did we create StarrCox?
We’re not like other business coaches. We don’t give you videos just to leave you on your own to implement what you learn.
We actually DO THE WORK WITH YOU OR FOR YOU (depending on your needs)!
Whether you need intermittent help or long-term hands-on support, we’ll be there to set you on a tailored path to success.
Our Dream Team of experts at StarrCox will ensure YOU RECEIVE THE INNOVATIVE CUSTOM SOLUTION YOUR UNIQUE BUSINESS DESERVES:
✅Discuss what tasks/projects have you feeling overwhelmed or stuck.
✅Discover what you can hand over to the StarrCox Dream Team (either for one project or long-term) so you can show up in your ZONE OF GENIUS for your clients.
✅Delegate (and celebrate) if it’s a fit for us to work together!
✅An approach that works for YOU. (Just because it worked for someone else doesn’t mean that it’s your journey.)
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When you’re in the business of helping people get ahead, it’s important to know what makes a successful coach.
The three most impactful things we’ve learned on our journey?
1. Listening is key to understanding your client’s needs, providing tailored solutions, and nurturing relationships.
2. Taking risks allows you to push boundaries, stand out in a crowded industry, and ultimately succeed.
3. And the third thing that has been most impactful for us is our commitment to continuous learning—always staying ahead of the game and providing the best possible service to our clients.
For those who are early in their journey, our advice would be to focus on developing these three qualities. Practice active listening, take calculated risks, and never stop learning. These skills will serve you well not only in business, but in life as well. And if you ever need a helping hand, you know where to find us – at StarrCox
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
The world has enough people who can do everything. We want to work with those who can do a few things really well.
At StarrCox, we firmly believe that it’s better to go all in on our strengths and let the experts handle the rest. Why waste time and energy trying to improve in areas where we’re not as strong when we could be using that same time and energy to excel in what we’re already good at?
We’ve seen firsthand the benefits of focusing on our strengths – it allows us to provide top-notch service to our clients and stand out in a crowded market. Plus, when we work with other experts who are strong in areas where we’re not, it’s a win-win for everyone involved. Our clients get the best possible service, and we get to focus on what we do best. So, if you’re a business owner or coach who’s feeling overwhelmed by trying to do it all, remember that it’s okay (and encouraged) to ask for help.
