Meet Maritza Nunes

We were lucky to catch up with Maritza Nunes recently and have shared our conversation below.

Maritza, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

The ability to be open to constant evolution. Embracing digital tools like the iPad and Apple Pencil opened a whole new creative dimension for me. It allows me to refine my style, explore new ideas, and ultimately share my ever-evolving perspective on what beauty means.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am an illustrator and surface designer. I focus mainly on stylized portraits of women of color, blooming florals, and playful patterns. Pastel palettes and bold pops of color reflect my Caribbean upbringing, surrounded by strong, beautiful women. My goal is to share my unique perspective on beauty and representation through unapologetically feminine illustrations.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

A willingness to learn is essential, and being adaptable to new technologies and processes. Most importantly, I believe that self-motivation and discipline are key ingredients to move forward in finding and evolving your creative voice.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am always looking for collaborations that will complement my creative voice. Folks who are looking for feminine floral designs and illustrations for their home decor goods, stationery items and apparel will be ideal to work with.
