Meet Heather Plumlee

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Heather Plumlee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Heather, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

Yoga helped me gain confidence and self-esteem, especially as a professional woman in marketing. It promotes mindfulness and self-awareness, helping me recognize and appreciate my strengths. Poses like the Warrior series embody strength and determination, building mental resilience. Practicing regularly reduces my stress and anxiety, allowing me to approach challenges with a calm and focused mind. This inner peace fosters a sense of self-assurance, making it easier for me to handle presentations, meetings, and deadlines confidently.

Yoga also promotes a balanced lifestyle, important for maintaining healthy self-esteem. It’s my time to practice physical health through poses and mental clarity through meditation, ensuring I’m physically fit and emotionally balanced. By adding yoga into my routine, I build a positive self-image and a deeper connection with myself, empowering me to excel in my career with renewed confidence and self-esteem.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

In my VoyageKC interview, I spoke about my deep commitment to continuous learning and embracing new technologies. Currently, I’m transitioning my focus from marketing communication to operations. Having worked in marketing for over two decades, I’ve witnessed the tremendous impact of analyzing customer data gathered from every interaction. Understanding how customers engage with us, how they respond to our communication, and when and how we communicate is vital, much like nurturing any meaningful relationship. My goal is to contribute to enhancing the customer experience by leveraging this valuable data.

As my skills and passion grow, I will share this knowledge through in-person speaking engagements and on social platforms. Follow me on Instagram for updates.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three most important qualities that had an impact on my journey were courage, imagination, and perseverance. I had the courage to imagine the life I wanted to live, and I had the perseverance to see it through.

My advice is: first, realize that you are not alone; you are part of something greater. Secondly, be willing, reasonable, and assertive, but be flexible in all three.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?

I think it’s important to focus on your strengths to improve your job performance and job satisfaction. Using your natural talents allows you to work efficiently and confidently, leading to recognition and advancement. It’s good for your self-esteem too. But it’s also important to work on your weaknesses to become a more well-rounded professional. Balancing your strengths and areas for improvement helps your overall professional development.

Early in my career, I wanted to be knowledgeable in many areas. This helped me figure out what I enjoyed and what I didn’t. You can’t always do only the things you enjoy, but knowing what you like can help you plan your career long-term. Now, as a more experienced professional, I focus on getting better at the things that bring me joy. Instead of just improving what I’m good at or working on my weaknesses, I ask myself, “What brings me joy?” and develop accordingly.
