We recently connected with Crystal Orozco and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Crystal, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Being a Mexican-American, my resilience comes from my parents strength & sacrifices they have made for my sister and I to provide us the opportunities they have today. They are immigrants from Mexico who came to a foreign country, not speaking the language, to provide their family and generations to come a better future. Although, I have personally had many struggles growing up in the USA, as a first generation Latina student, being the eldest in my family, the first one to leave home to purse a degree, and now an entrepreneur. I have had to be resilient and not give up, even when times were very difficult. I think of what would have happened if my parents hadn’t been resilient, our lives would be so differently. I have so much gratitude to be able to be in a place where I have opportunities, even through all the struggles. I am resilient because I want to make my parents proud of everything they have accomplished and I want to be a leader and inspiration to my sister & other Latinas.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a Latina Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Certified Diabetes Educator, salsa instructor, and owner of Vida Nutrition Consulting. I am a first-generation student and a proud daughter of immigrant parents from Mexico. I am passionate about serving the Latino community and creating healthier communities together! Vida Nutrition Consulting offers bilingual employee wellness, nutrition consulting, and media services. Services include: employee wellness programs, nutrition workshops, media & brand sponsorships, public speaking engagements, and wellness health fairs. The most exciting part of being a business owner is the ability to create your own brand & community. I have loved really figuring out what makes me unique & how I can best represent & support a community that is unique to me. Being an entrepreneur, is a continuous learning curve and getting out of your comfort zone. This has been tremendously rewarding & I hope I can continue to have a sustainable business, while supporting my Latino community.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience: Things will not always be easy, even when things get hard. Breathe, have patience, most things will have a solution.
Perseverance: Don’t give up! Don’t get down. Perseverance & having consistency is key. Everyone works at different speeds or learns differently, go at your own pace but consistently. You will achieve whatever you put your mind to.
Flexible: Most times in business, you have to try different things and see what works. You have to be flexible & adapt. You will likely not get it right on the first try. Just learn from each initiative or project & keep moving.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am looking to collaborate with food brand partners! As a media dietitian I can elevate their food products or ingredients as a credentialed nutrition expert through nutrition writing, product reviews, media reels/food photography/recipe development, or TV segments.
Another area of my business is focused on employee wellness, I am looking to collaborate with businesses who are interested in implementing wellness initiatives or wellness programs for their employees.
I am always looking for interns in the nutrition/wellness space, marketing, website design, or videographers. Contact me if you would like to collaborate! www.vidanutritionconsulting.com or you can find me on IG @vidanutritionconsulting
