We were lucky to catch up with Dionne Webster-Cox recently and have shared our conversation below.

Dionne , so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?

Capoeira is African-Brazilian martial art and a powerful way to build both physical and mental strength. The combination of fluid movements, acrobatics, and rhythmic music not only helps to improve agility, balance, and endurance but also fosters a strong sense of discipline and mindfulness. The communal aspect of Capoeira can also boost your mood and provide a supportive environment, all of which are great for maintaining optimism. It sounds like a perfect blend of exercise and cultural expression that supports both your body and mind!My optimism is deeply rooted in my faith and my understanding that I am on a path guided by a higher purpose. I believe it is crucial to be mindful of the company I keep and to protect my mental space from negativity. What I allow into my mind and heart can significantly impact my outlook and, ultimately, my success. I have to emphasize the need to shield myself from naysayers and those who do not understand my vision or what I believe I am called to do.

When it comes to mental and fiscal strength, I have learned the importance of being prepared for both the good times and the challenging ones. I strive to be disciplined, ensuring that I build up my mental and financial reserves during prosperous times so that I am well-equipped to navigate through periods of difficulty. For me, it’s about staying balanced and not letting the highs distract me from the need to prepare for the inevitable lows.

Being mentally strong means staying focused on my goals, maintaining a clear vision, and not letting setbacks derail my progress. It’s about continuous learning, growth, and adapting to new situations with a positive mindset. Mental strength isn’t just about enduring tough times but also about thriving through them by staying proactive and solution-oriented.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Throughout my journey, three key qualities have been instrumental: honesty, fearlessness, and determination. These traits have not only shaped my path but have also been critical in navigating the challenges of leading a civil rights and personal injury firm as a Black woman in metropolitan Detroit—territory that is often uncharted.

1. Honesty: Being truthful with myself and others has been a cornerstone of my journey. It’s about staying authentic, clear in your purpose, and transparent in your dealings. My advice to those early in their careers is to always stay true to your values and principles, even when faced with pressure to conform. Honesty will help you build trust and credibility, both of which are essential in any profession.

2. Fearlessness: You must be willing to take bold steps, even when the path is uncertain. For me, this means not letting fear dictate my actions or limit my ambitions. I’m careful about the company I keep because negativity can be contagious; I refuse to entertain doubts or negativity from those who don’t understand my vision or what I believe I am called to do. My advice is to push beyond your comfort zone, embrace the unknown, and don’t be afraid to break new ground. Fearlessness isn’t about the absence of fear but about moving forward despite it.

3. Determination: Determination has been my driving force, especially when things don’t go as planned. Not everything will fall into place immediately, and there will be setbacks. But the key is persistence—keep making the next call, keep pushing forward, and keep believing in your vision. As Deion Sanders says, “Keep making plays.” Whether you’re a lawyer working tirelessly on a case or a salesperson facing rejection, don’t stop. Your perseverance will eventually pay off.

For those just starting, my advice is simple: stay committed to your journey, be honest about who you are and what you want, approach challenges with fearlessness, and never lose your determination. Surround yourself with positive influences, keep your faith strong, and remember that the obstacles you face are not roadblocks but stepping stones to your success. Keep making plays, and don’t stop.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Absolutely, I am always open to collaborating and partnering with talented individuals. I deeply value the contributions of those with diverse skills and am constantly seeking to bring exceptional talent on board, whether it’s within my law firm or across my other ventures. I believe in the power of collaboration and am excited to connect with professionals who are passionate, driven, and aligned with my mission.
