Meet Rhonda Johnson

We were lucky to catch up with Rhonda Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Rhonda, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

First off, I have suffered from imposte syndrome most of my life and it used to beat me down because I could never silence the voice (or thoughts) that said ‘You’re not good enough’ ‘You don’t belong here’ Changing my thoughts helped but changing my environment, really helped meaning I put myself in a position that I had to step up. So, for example, I recently got a part time job where I had no previous experience with the position but I have great people skills. This position calls for me to step into the role and become more confident. I worked through my imposter syndrom and now, for the first time in my life, really… I feel like I have overcome those feelings in large part.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three most impactful qualities: Relationship building skills, public speaking skills, Leadership skiils.

Advice: Get out of your comfort zone. Feel the fear but find a way to move through it. Greatness is waiting for you on the other side.

Even if you are a introvert (like me), find your way to building people skills, which means, yes.. talking to people. I have learned to have conversation about things that you like to talk about and you will find your people and enhance your skills.

Public speaking- Whatever chance you get to do it, do it. I have found that this doesn’t mean jumping on the first stage you see in front of people and talking. Start small, introduce yourself and start conversation. Then, run and find a stage or a space where you can start teaching. If you need to get your skills up, then do that. But start off with speaking where you can!

Leader- You are a leader. Find a way to stand out of the crown and take command of something and lean into those leadership skills. I promise you that you will be SOOO surprised how much of a leader you really are.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I feel overwhelmed, I literally breathe. I actually pair it with an action such as bringing my arms over my head on the inhale and then bringing my arms back to my side on the exhale. So, when I can’t do that for whatever reason, I put my hand to my chest and deep breathe. I use an action that is specific to breathing that is a double reminded to breathe. Just breathe… seriously. We rush thorugh life and we breathe shallowly but just remmebring to breathe clears that feeling of overwhelm and grounds me!
