Meet John Hunt

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful John Hunt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with John below.

Hi John, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?

Self-discipline has always been a strength for me since I was young. Focusing on athletics and academic is where it blossomed. I focused on school and sports from 4th grade until I graduated from College after D1 lacrosse. Self-discipline is something that you harness once you understand the results from it….consistency, perseverance, persistence, and faith. When I was in college, my sophomore year, I got into some trouble and drinking was the main factor in everything. I was 19, playing big time athletics, far away from home, and needed to change my lifestyle to remain where I was…..so I stopped drinking alcohol. That was August 28th, 2000…..and I’ve never looked back. It was very difficult but it was a necessary step in my journey. I had good grades and I was playing big time lacrosse in Baltimore, MD….but I was making horrible decisions outside of the classroom and off the field. My self discipline is the only thing that saved me….I used it to focus on making decisions that were hard day to day to keep myself sober. I offered to be the designated driver, I made myself go home and be in bed by 10pm nightly, I studied more than I ever had before and I was at every practice or workout early and stayed late. Since that experience in college, I know understand my strength in saying “no” or putting emphasis on things I know must happen but aren’t fun. In business, there’s a lot of things that have to happen to be successful and self discipline to make those decision for the best of the company or yourself is a true super power.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’ve been involved with start ups since I moved to San Diego in 2003 and I’ve been self employed since 2010. Most of my work no focuses on Moccasin Fly Club, our trips/clients, lodges, and expansion. I also hold a position as Global Sales Director for a tech company and overall all sales and marketing. I’m always excited to get involved in projects from the start….it’s where most of the progress and process happen. Seeing something come from idea to paper to design to tangible creation is what I love to see for myself, our companies, and my network. Moccasin Fly Club is a world wide fish & game concierge service that helps people find the outdoors from eco tourism to fishing adventures to safaris. Our lodges help in that mission since we now have places for people to stay on those trips that we book. It’s always a fun day putting out fires and helping people realize their next expedition.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Persistence, Truthfulness, and Impact – Being able to understand what is and isn’t (Truth) – that’s a valuable trait to have in this world of false narratives, social media, and dreamwork – You have to know what is and isn’t but also be able to see how to get from one to the other along a trail of goals and progress (Impact) – Persistence is Self Discipline again and again….day in and day out….how long can you focus on this journey to get it across the finish line….and start all over again and never lose impact. Developing these traits will make you a better person, friend, partner, co-worker, and family member…..they are invaluable to your progression in success. Don’t lie to yourself or others. Don’t give up on anything you feel is right. Don’t be okay staying in the same place for months at a time……change is necessary in everything….nothing has 100% retention in this world.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

Routine is my #1 factor is keeping all the balls in the air and making progress. My routine stems around my wife and kids, my workout and health, and my ability to stay organized through each day & week. I still have an “old world” paper calendar that is with me where ever I go and is the “bible of organization” for me – it keeps me on track and it allows me to prioritize things that fit my routine – Is this for my family or me? When does it need to be accomplished? Can it be accomplished today in free time that I have? When am I going to run/hike/go to yoga/lift/ or rest?
My biggest advice is that what you can do today….do today. What can wait until tomorrow….waits until tomorrow. And what you have to do every day to make you the best human you can be….needs to happen no matter what. I have to stay on top of what is happening and also understand what is coming along in the next week, month, and year. “Failing to plan is planning to fail” is a very accurate saying and “proper planning prevents piss poor performance” – remember Truth comes what know what is and what isn’t and as you get more and more data…..you know how to plan for what is and what you want.
