Meet Sam Landu

We were lucky to catch up with Sam Landu recently and have shared our conversation below.

Sam, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from the hurt, turmoil, and constant conflicts that come with life. What usually makes others quit, I turn into my ammunition. You may not do the same as others – or be successful as quick. You need to keep going. You keep going for yourself.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m at a stage with my brand Contrast, and as an individual, I’m more hands on with ideas, brainstorming and even working with other designers and upcoming clothing brands. Contrast is based on African and African-American cultures, I would go as far to include the West Indies. Everything ties in together to express our shared experiences whether good or bad. My brand has been featured in the Oak Park Mall – a popular mall in the Kansas City metro area. I’m currently gearing up staff for my first runway show. The focus is solely representing the ideas in my mind to a tee for my growing audience.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Strength: I had to be strong since my teenage years to accomplish the things I have. I’m very hard on myself and I just built that strength through doubt from others, failing, and then winning.

Focus: You have to have tunnel vision for your vision. Not everybody can go, and this is where a lot of entrepreneurs and creatives learn that fact about life.

Energy: I can’t create a lifeform; as I’d like to call it without large energy. I have the desire to bring a fire out of myself to create what’s in my mind. I find what fuels me and I indulge in it to make things.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

Consistency. It sounds bland, but I keep going to bat for what I want. I push and pray for it. You need constant work to sharpen your skills and show others and yourself you are serious.
