We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lance Kennedy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lance below.
Lance, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
From my experience, self-discipline is the key to success. It’s not about trying to do everything at once but focusing on what matters. By concentrating on high-priority, high-impact activities, I can direct my energy toward what will make the most significant difference. This means letting go of distractions and tasks that don’t contribute to long-term goals. I learned to say “no.”
Self-discipline also involves regularly reassessing how I use my time. Filling free time with fun, low-impact activities is easy, but true discipline comes from consistently refocusing on the pursuits that offer the greatest return on investment. It’s a process of consciously choosing where to invest your efforts, ensuring each moment contributes to something meaningful.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a criminal defense attorney who works with both federal and Texas law. What excites me the most about my work is the variety of cases we handle every week. No two cases are the same, so we develop a custom criminal defense plan for each client. Every defendant has unique circumstances, and we tailor our strategy to meet their specific needs.
At my firm, we pride ourselves on being technologically advanced. We use the best available technology, including AI integration, to ensure that our defense strategies are as precise and effective as possible. This commitment to innovation, along with a focus on personalized defense, makes our work both challenging and rewarding.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, three qualities have been most impactful in my journey:
1. Being forward-thinking – This has allowed me to stay ahead in my field, especially by embracing technology and innovation. I have found that thinking ahead and being willing to adapt is key to long-term success, particularly in a rapidly evolving legal landscape.
2. Ignoring naysayers and cutting off toxic people—Along the way, there will always be people who doubt you or try to hold you back. One of the best decisions I have made is learning to ignore those voices and surround myself with supportive and constructive people. It’s vital to protect your mental space and energy.
3. Never giving up – Persistence is everything. In my career, there have been plenty of setbacks and challenges, but the one thing that has kept me moving forward is my refusal to quit. The ability to keep pushing, especially when things get tough, is what separates those who succeed from those who don’t.
My advice to those early in their journey is to cultivate these qualities. Stay forward-thinking by constantly learning and embracing change, protect yourself from negativity, and most importantly, develop a mindset where giving up is never an option.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
A book that has significantly impacted my development is Principles by Ray Dalio. One of the most valuable insights I gained from the book is the concept of radical transparency and truth-seeking. Dalio emphasizes the importance of being honest with yourself and others and creating a culture where truth prevails, even when it’s uncomfortable. This principle has shaped how I approach both my personal life and my work as a criminal defense attorney.
Another impactful lesson is his concept of ’embracing reality and dealing with it.’ Dalio talks about the importance of facing challenges head-on and using them as opportunities for growth. This mindset of not shying away from difficulties but tackling them directly has been instrumental in my approach to building strategies for complex cases.
Lastly, his ‘principles for decision-making’ – focusing on logic, data, and structured thinking – have reinforced my belief in the importance of being forward-thinking and adaptive, which has allowed me to stay innovative in my practice.
