Meet Ryan Coleman

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Ryan Coleman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Ryan, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

I like to say that I didn’t find my purpose—my purpose found me. It all started when I hit one of the lowest points in my life. I walked away from a promising football career to chase a love I feared losing due to distance. Despite my efforts, the relationship ended, and I later dropped out of community college, bouncing from job to job with no clear direction.

One day, I saw a sign to join the Army National Guard. As a young man without a sense of purpose, I knew I needed something to get me back on track. The military did just that. It sparked a journey of becoming the best version of myself, attracting everything that came with it.

I went from feeling purposeless to becoming highly motivated, inspired, and disciplined, thanks to the principles I learned during my time in service. This became the foundation for rediscovering my love for fitness. It quickly became an obsession, positively transforming not just my body but also my mind and spirit.

People began to notice my transformation and started reaching out for help. I earned an Army Achievement Medal for helping members of my unit pass their Physical Fitness Test. I then began creating workout programs online for others who were willing to put in the effort. That’s when I truly stepped into my power.

This journey of personal development led me to a life of service to others. I knew what transformation did for me, and I wanted others to experience the same. I believe that at any given time, if we have the will to change, we can.

My ultimate goal now is to bring my community closer to God by using functional fitness as a foundation to introduce them to total wellness through mindful practices. I believe God took the time to prepare me so that when the intersection of preparation and opportunity came, I would be ready—and I was.

As I navigate life today, my purpose is to transform lives. It’s an ever-evolving journey, but I’m more aligned with my purpose than I’ve ever been before.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

On a day-to-day basis, I manage and operate my personal training facility. In addition, I frequently take the stage as a breakout session leader, typically covering topics related to Wellness and Leadership. I’ve developed a leadership course focused on mindfulness and offer a variety of digital products, such as workout and holistic wellness guides, for those seeking remote access.

I’ve also collaborated with several schools, youth sports organizations, and have provided workshops for educators. My certification in Youth Mental Health First Aid is something I hold close to my heart, given the impact it has on both students and educators.

Furthermore, my brand is known for two premier events. The first is ‘Bootcamp & Brunch,’ a 3-hour experience held every August that combines fitness, food, and entertainment. The second is ‘The Omni Experience Wellness Conference,’ which takes place during the last weekend of the year. This event helps participants step into the new year with intention and a plan for execution, rather than just goal-setting.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Communication, Emotional Intelligence, and Leadership—these are the three areas that have shaped my life as I know it today.

Communication is vital in every aspect of life. Whether in personal or business relationships, effective communication is key. It’s the bridge that can separate where you are from where you want to be. It can make or break opportunities and serve as the foundation for healthy, sustainable relationships. To develop this skill, I recommend reading, public speaking or networking, and having tough conversations with loved ones, even when it’s uncomfortable. Learning to embrace discomfort is crucial for growth.

Emotional Intelligence (EQ) has impacted many areas of my life, from how I react and respond to situations, to managing my emotions effectively. It’s vital to embody all emotions as part of who we are, and rather than suppressing them, we must learn to navigate them daily. A strong sense of EQ helps build resilience, confidence, empathy, and compassion toward others. To improve in this area, I suggest reading, listening to podcasts, practicing mindfulness (such as meditation), and taking personality assessments like the Enneagram to gain deeper self-awareness.

Leadership is something I resisted for a long time. I’ve always had leadership qualities, but it felt easier to stay out of the spotlight. However, I’ve come to realize that God created us all to lead in some way. Whether we recognize it or not, we influence people in our lives. Learning to follow first teaches us how to lead and relate to those we guide. I believe the Bible provides one of the ultimate leadership teachings, especially regarding the adversity that comes with it. You can also enhance your leadership skills by mentoring someone who looks up to you, making difficult decisions when others won’t, and being willing to do what’s necessary to reach new heights. To inspire others is one of the highest human acts.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

Kobe Bryant “The Mamba Mentality”

Growing up, all my friends loved Micheal Jordan & Lebron James but for me there was something in particular that stood out about Kobe that the others didn’t have.

It was the killer instinct and determination that Kobe coined “The Mamba Mentality”. He was a true student of the game and always had a relentless will to learn about his opponents and what he could do to rise above them all. More importantly though, his process towards progress is second to none. He loved his crafted and was addicted to getting better day in and day out regardless of the circumstances. He never allowed success or failure to define him, he simply made the choice to get better everyday in all aspects of life.

This book taught me how to always maintain the willingness to learn, how to overcome adversity even when it seems like it will never end (which is doesn’t) and also how to balance life of a high achiever with being a family man and community leader.

Black mambas are defensive and quick to strike if threatened but prefer to avoid confrontation. They’re territorial and will defend their space aggressively if cornered, though they typically try to escape first. Their mentality is about survival—flee if possible, fight if necessary.

Humans can apply the black mamba’s mindset by focusing on self-preservation and smart decision-making:

Avoid unnecessary conflict: Like the mamba, prioritize peace and walk away from situations that don’t serve you or pose unnecessary risks.

Defend when needed: Stand your ground only when truly necessary, protecting your boundaries and well-being with assertiveness.

Be alert and prepared: Stay aware of your surroundings and be ready to act quickly when a situation requires it, but always choose the most effective response—whether it’s retreating or standing firm.

This mindset encourages a balanced approach to challenges—calmly assessing situations, avoiding unnecessary battles, but confidently defending yourself when required.
