We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ally Schulte. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ally below.
Ally, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
As a photographer, I prioritize the things that make me happy and inspire me to keep my creativity alive. I believe that creativity thrives when you’re genuinely connected to what you’re passionate about. For me, it’s all about finding the beauty in the little things, staying curious, and constantly challenging myself to see the world from new perspectives. For me, this can vary from carrying my camera on local hikes I’ve done many times before, to venturing to a new location. I’m always thinking about how I can capture the feelings, moments, and emotions that will tell a story for years to come. Spending time in the mountains is especially important for me—it reconnects me to the innate curiosity that first sparked my journey as a photographer and continues to fuel my creative vision!
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Photography is my passion, and adventure fuels my soul. I’ve always loved photography, even when I was young. To me, there was something so powerful about a photograph—the ability to capture a moment, memory, and emotion, and tell a story with one simple frame. And to this day, it’s still my favorite part. On every project I work on, it’s my goal to capture moments and experiences in a unique but authentic way.
In my free time, you can find me hiking on trails, climbing up mountains, or hitting the ski slopes. And when it comes to my professional endeavors, I love photographing people and their dogs, whether it’s for dog birthdays, elopements, or celebrations of love.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were curiosity, taking action, and deep technical knowledge. Curiosity drove me to try new things and learn the ropes, pushing me to explore new perspectives and improve my skills. Taking action by connecting with others in the industry and getting my name out there helped me build strong relationships and gain valuable opportunities. Finally, knowing my camera like the back of my hand has been crucial—being prepared for anything that comes my way allows me to focus on capturing authentic moments and telling stories through my photography.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, the first thing I do is write everything down. It helps me clear my mind and see what I need to tackle. I’ve also implemented a project management software, Notion, to stay organized and use color-coded calendar invites to block out time for both professional tasks and personal breaks for myself. My biggest piece of advice when you’re feeling overwhelmed is to break everything down into smaller tasks and focus on one item at a time. Ask yourself, ‘What can I do next to make the biggest impact?’ Start there, and just keep going one step at a time.
