We recently connected with Cammry Lapka and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cammry , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Confidence is a ruse and self-esteem is a frame of mind. When I was younger, I was known as “the quietest one in class.” I was terrified of social interactions and I kept to myself as much as possible. As I got older, I realized I needed to change if I was going to sell my artwork /and/ sell myself. I remember being hard on myself all the time for “not being good enough” and “not being smart enough.” Only thing was, I am good enough and I am smart enough. Convincing myself otherwise was counterintuitve to my life purpose. Over the course of a few years, I practiced positive self-talk. For every bad thing I had to say, I made myself think of one good thing. This literally kickstarted a whole personality change. Once I began talking to myself with kindness and love inside, everything else came naturally. Confidence is directly rooted in your self-esteem plus experience. So, I enjoy going out and getting experience, pushing my boundaries each time I’m out.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Yes! Hello! I am Cammry and I LOVE cartoons and comics. Ever since I was a kid, I loved telling stories and being apart of stories. I have always had quite the imagination and I found using it made mundane life just a little less boring. My favorite thing about doing artwork is character design. I draw a lot of Dungeons and Dragons characters as well as main characters for comic books or people’s original characters. At conventions, commissions are one of my biggest sellers.
I travel around the pacific northwest for comic cons and small art events. So if you’re in the area, I’d love to chat! I put all of my events on my event page on my website which can be found here: https://www.cammrylapkaart.com/events
Currently, I’m working on an autobiographical comic book called FOSS. It is slated to be released late this year. 🙂
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Learn how to socialize and talk. I have ADD and tend to stumble over my words since my brain moves faster than my mouth, but experience has given me the tools to think before I speak. Ask questions more than answering them. Connect with people through their interests. Networking is really important to a business and you never know who you’ll meet!
2. Really learn your passion. Research and ask professionals you meet about how they got where they are at. don’t let your ego get in the way!
3. Passion! Never forget why you are doing the thing! Sometimes life and money can make things muddy. That’s why I make sure to spend at least a few hours every week doing /FUN/ things with my passion. For example, painting at the lake, using a new art tool, writing dumb little stories with no point etc. You can get burnt out really fast from just working.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I love collaborations! I’d like to get together with people who have had their work published, are well organized, passionate, and aren’t afraid of trying new things! Biggest one is people who are interested in comics and cartoons! However, that’s not a strict rule. I’m always open to discussing things 🙂
