We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michael Brovac a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Michael, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Purpose is something that I think is crucial to any human being.
It’s also something I believe we all have but it’s our responsibility to channel/discover.
My purpose was discovered through extreme trial and tribulation in my early childhood and youth.
Me and my brother’s existence consisted of being sick or in a hospital.
Sadly he passed away when he was 10 years of age and I was 15, It took me looking at his life and death directly to truly see my purpose and why I was still here when he was not.
That then made me inspired to become who I am today.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My profession revolves around helping others grow mentally, physically, and emotionally.
I am a player development basketball Coach.
My job revolves around being a main support for professional basketball players.
Whether it’s courtside consulting when a player is down in a high-pressure situation or at the gym getting a workout my job is very development-oriented.
Outside of this, I am a speaker with experience speaking in schools, meeting rooms, locker rooms, or even gym spaces to inspire any audience through my story and given topic.
Lastly, I am a life coach and trainer having worked out of 3 gyms.
I’ve also used my experience through my story to help individuals who have been hospitalized suffering from a lack of connection and belonging through my brand CAM-O.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The top 3 impactful skills I’ve gained over my journey start with my communication ability.
This has given me so many opportunities and truly the confidence I have today.
Without it, I would not be able to do anything I do within my work, social life, or all other areas.
How did I develop this? Reps.
Any moment you can start a conversation with people, communicate on the phone even chime in on conversations that typically you would not do it.
This creates learning and exposure to the skill.
Something as simple as reading 10 pages a night from a book you enjoy can take your communication skills to the next level.
My second quality goes to active listening.
When you make an effort to listen the things you learn are tripled.
A great way you can develop this is just by asking questions,
Lastly, my ability to lead and be assertive.
As a Coach and Speaker, I’m constantly expected to lead individuals into positive change and direction.
With this skill, I’ve noticed you gain almost instant trust and credibility once you follow through with a positive intent.
I’ve developed this through mentors, seeing how they lead me to positive change which has naturally motivated me to do the same.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
The people who have helped me the most in overcoming challenges and ultimately building the skill set that I have today are my loving family and mentors/close friends.
Without them, I would not be who I am today.
I believe that everyone needs to have a community, without it the desire to exist is very little.
I also believe that to grow you need support and as human beings we all need connection.
Coming from a lifestyle where I was isolated for 18 years being around others and having this support means so much to me.
For those who may feel isolated or alone, I advise you to seek connection anywhere possible.
I’ve noticed that when you put yourself in environments that provide opportunities for connection it becomes way more accessible.
This can be a Facebook group, Instagram group, or even better, a Discord server!
Ultimately the goal is to put yourself in environments that promote this connection and support.
Without others, your life can feel meaningless.
