Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marco Mata. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marco, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I like to look for inspiration in different activities, just like reading, watching movies, or just going for a walk into the woods helps me to have new fresh ideas and to try things I haven’t. Sometimes all you need is to leave your working area for a couple of hours!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a music composer for films and media. I’ve been producing since 2019 when I bought my first software. After being learning by my own I decided to take the next step for my career and I moved to the USA to study in Full Sail University, where I discovered my passion for film & video games music. In 2023 I got my first opportunity to score a short film and it was the start of my career as a film composer. That year (2023) was full of new opportunities, and I had the chance of being the composer for 5 short films and 1 audio book. I won my first Best Music Award with the score for “Forest of Fools” and 3 of the short films I worked on were present in many film festivals around the world from USA, to Japan! Nowadays I am still working to build my career as a music composer by working on new upcoming projects I can’t wait to be done.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Creativity, since my profession is all about that. I try always to use it so every project I work on has a uniqueness that adds value to the final result. Open mind was a very important part of my career, since I moved from Costa Rica to United States to study, the difference in culture and lifestyle was big, but I went through it and embrace the new things I was living. This has helped me to be part of proyects from very different cultures, from Japanese to latinoamerican. Music, in general, music is an area of knowledge that has changed my life. I love learning new techniques, new theory, and styles to implement in my music, and the best part is you never stop learning. It’s being 5 years since I started making music, now I’ve learned and improved a lot, but I know in 5 more years I will know a lot of crazy things I don’t right now.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
First, my parents, they motivated me to study what I love, music, and I would not be where I am without their support. Second, all my film industry friends who trusted me to work on their projects even tho I had no experience in film scoring at the time. Without them I would not have done half of the projects I did, and wouldn’t have seen my music on the big screen.
