Meet JaQuita Johnson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful JaQuita Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi JaQuita, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Since I can remember I’ve always had the can do attitude since I was a kid and my self-esteem has ALWAYS been the highest. My mother would always say, “You can do anything you put your mind to. Keep God first and never give up.” That has always stuck with me throughout my life. As I got older & started to pursue my career the confidence began to fluctuate. I would be confident in getting a high score on finals and landing my dream job. When I didn’t get those things I’d lose that confidence & get super discouraged. I would beat myself up a lot if I didn’t meet my expectations for what my life should be in that moment. I would compare my level of success to others & start to feel like I hadn’t done enough. I never let my self-esteem get low no matter the circumstances. I’ve always thought highly of myself. I’ve always spoke positive affirmations every morning. My God mother was & still is, my go-to person when my world is in shambles and I’d call her to vent. Her favorite thing to say, “Pretty is as Pretty does JaQuita! Life & Death is in the power of the tongue. Speak positive things for yourself and watch those things happen. Take Jesus with you & always be beautiful.”

To this day, no matter how many obstacles I have to overcome, I keep those things in the forefront of my mind to keep me going. As a young, black, successful, licensed esthetician the industry can be super tough. Social media can become overwhelming with the negativity. Life happens and we can easily become discouraged, which affects our confidence in ourselves.

For me, I keep those sayings on a sticky note on my bathroom mirror as a reminder that I CAN DO ALL THINGS! I keep positive people around me to uplift me, mentor me and celebrate my success with me. I give myself the space to make mistakes but also, I give myself the gift of self love! When you genuinely love yourself & pour into YOU, then there’s never a moment the self-esteem will drop! There’s no time when the confidence level isn’t at its highest point. Lock in on your dreams and always bet on yourself.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
3 qualities that were most impactful: Patience, Persistent and Resilience

Advice: Keep Going! Never allow others to project their fears onto you! Give yourself space to make mistakes but learn from them! Nothing in life comes easy but if it’s something your heart desire, never give up!

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
I don’t have an ideal client because everyone is different and unique in their own way.

My ideal client characteristics would be, someone consistent with their appointments, serious about their skin goals, someone who follows directions of their esthetician & understand that healthy skin doesn’t happen overnight. A loyal client.
