We recently connected with Josephine Eve and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Josephine , so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
I honestly haven’t found the easiest way for me to overcome a writers block just like that, at the snap of my fingers. But I feel like, when I feel an emotion very deeply and strongly, is when my writers block breaks. And I don’t feel strong emotions like that all the time, which can be hard when trying to write a song and I don’t feel passionate or relatable with it enough to want to record it or play it out. So, when I feel really angry, because someone made me mad, or I get super sad about something, and it sparks a song idea, those get me out of my writers block, and it makes the song mean more in way.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Josephine Eve! I’m a 19 year old musician from Kansas City, Missouri, who’s been out performing since the age of 12. I got my start in singing, playing out, and performing for people at School of Rock, where I gained my love for all things music and decided that this is what I wanted to do with my life. I met some really cool people there and started a band with them called, Grindstone. I performed with them for a couple of years, but eventually decided to branch off and do solo stuff. So for the past year and a half, I’ve been out performing out at bars, restaurants, fairs, casinos, venues and really any and everywhere I can. Sometimes you can catch me solo, sometimes in duos and trios and sometimes with bands. Currently I’m super focused on building my brand, and putting more of my own music out. Creating is my biggest passion along with performing. And I always love to get to perform those songs out along with playing my favorite covers. School of rock really opened my eyes to so many genres of music so I really try to embrace that at my gigs by playing so many different genres of music. Which also really helps me connect with the audience more if everyone’s getting to hear something they like. Along with promoting my own music at these gigs. Speaking of, I just had my latest song drop a few weeks ago called “My Colors Change Overnight” that’s streaming out on all platforms! If you’re into a popish rockish sort of tune definitely check it out!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, my most impactful skills I had in growing my business and name and making music my full time job was persistence. I got my guitar almost 2 years ago for Christmas from my parents, and my mom booked me my first solo gig in March of 2023. So for 3 months, I had to practice basically every single day to have enough music for a 2 1/2 hour set at a local brewery in my home town. Some days I would be so mad that I had to practice but my mom would always be able to get me down there. But after I practiced almost everyday for those three months, It all payed off. I played my gig, and what was something that I thought was gonna be terrifying, ended up being super fun. Now trust me, this gig wasn’t perfect by any means, but once I realized I could do that, things became so much easier and I’ve only gotten stronger and more confident at playing guitar and performing out by myself and with people as well!!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My mother. If it wasn’t for her booking my first gig and really pushing me to work hard for something, I don’t know where I’d be at right now. When I first even started performing with the band Grindstone, all of the parents of that group really helped us all, since we were all so young and really had no idea what we were doing. We were just kids who wanted to start a band for fun. This is where my mom really learned so much about the social media side of being a musician tho. Which then helped when I became a solo musician. She literally had so much knowledge on things like, what day and time most people are on their phones, and the best time to make posts vs stories. It’s honestly crazy the things she knows. But she just taught me so much about being a musician, other than just getting on a stage and singing. There’s so much more that goes into it and I would have been so completely flustered and overwhelmed by all of it, if it wasn’t for her.
