We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Deutsch a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
David, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Ooof wow, what a loaded question. This I feel like I’ve been developing my entire life. Due to trauma in childhood and then all the issues that stem while you grow up, I had a skewed sense of self and was insecure. But through consistently working on myself, my image, my persona, and telling myself to get out of my head, has really helped me to lead a happier, and much more fulfilled and healthy life.
I have noticed that a routine is crucial. Not down to the minute on obligations, but overall actions that I need to do everyday to keep myself and my mind happy and healthy. Every morning when I wake up, I try to do yoga, and then meditate, and then read a bit in the book I am reading. After this, I feel like my brain, body, and soul is ready to start the day. Mixed with a clean vegan diet, and exercise like walking, playing soccer, or hiking, with the more time spent outside the better, really helps to boost confidence, self esteem, and overall happiness in life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For me, communication, consistency, and passion are three incredible, and undeniable skills one needs to be able to make a lasting impact in their artistic journey.
For one, communication is of the utmost importance because no one can everything alone, and being able to clearly, and healthily communicate and discuss one’s thoughts, feelings, ideas, goals, dreams, objectives, determinations, and aspirations is absolutely crucial to figuring out and completing a goal.
Consistency is everything because no matter what, you have to show up. You have to show up to your meetings, your sessions, but also you have to show up for yourself, and want to show up for yourself.
Passion is as equal as the other two qualities simply because it is what drives all of us to do what we want to do. Without passion, we would be herded sheep grazing aimlessly in a field of grass, always being told what to do, what not to do, where to eat, where not to eat, etc. But having passion means you are chasing after the idea of something, a dream, a goal, an aspiration, and the willingness to get up every morning and work towards your goals and freedom and passion is absolutely crucial to your survival as an artist and creative.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I think to a certain degree honing one’s craft and being super stylized in your strengths is super crucial. But to get there, I think one must become well rounded in enough knowledge, expertise, and different areas of study to fully understand how, why, and where to hone one’s determination.
If you are trying to become a professional musician, I would recommend not only learning how to produce, write, record, mix, be able to play a myriad of genres, but also be able to have a set of business knowledge, also knowledge of so many other creative aspects in life like, cooking, comedy, movies, art, and non musical writing.
Learning other traits from different career fields can help create metaphors and you will be better able to relate to your own craft by learning the intricacies of another. Like how to properly, or creatively blend different spices together to create a well balanced, and rounded meal is as important on how to create a well rounded mix, or how to create a well balanced orchestration for your own music. There are so many parallels between every art form, that it helps to be able to learn oneself better through another medium, so that you can learn yourself more through your own mediums.
