Meet Jose Hernandez

We recently connected with Jose Hernandez and have shared our conversation below.

Jose, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?

I keep my creative alive by watching different types of videos from other cultures. I like to be innovative and do things that are not as common and you don’t see every day. I also watched a lot of movies and try to come up with things from my imagination based upon n an idea from a scene I’ve watched or things I see on a daily basis.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My name is Jose Hernandez , I am a professional stilt walker for over 16 years. It all started when I ran away with the circus due to my fascination with elephants. I was offered a job as a popcorn vendor and i accepted. One day I had the chance to fill in for a performer on stilts and it all just took off from there. I stayed with that show for many years right up until they shut their doors to the public. So I moved around to various other shows trying to fill the void left in me from the greatest show on earth. Not finding fulfillment I decided to make my own business in entertainment, where I gathered a bunch of other performers that were just as me trying to find their spot and so became TINYTAINMENT. We are still a small company that provides entertainment and smiles to children of all ages as the circus would say. We have just about everything from stiltwalkers to jugglers etc. Our small business brings joy to any event and makes it one to be remembered for sure.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

My three biggest skills that were impactful for me was my stilt walking skills, my juggling skills and ofcourse my perseverance and determination. I always wanted to be infront of the crowds and share what I can do with the world. Joining the circus helped me do that and put me infront of some of the biggest crowds I ever dreamed of. I would say to anyone starting their journey to not give up, to keep pushing because all it takes is one person you talk to that will actually put you on the spot you dreamed of. Keep making a difference and practicing your craft and doors will open on their own for you.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?

My biggest area of growth has been booking more gigs . I was normally just booking the last 3 months of the year which were my busiest, and now we run more often throughout the year with 6 months of back to back gigs and random ones throughout the following half. It has kept us busy for the past 12 months and all it took was some exposure from a few high end gigs we did. I am extremely happy with the outcome of our business and am looking forward to keep growing it and being successful in the entertainment world.
