We were lucky to catch up with Bradley Witherspoon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bradley, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
From a young age, the people around me were always very encouraging and uplifting. My mother always told me I can do or be anything I want to be. She raised my sister and I on that. No matter what your dreams are or how big they might be, chase them. You can do anything. Those were echo in the back of my mind every day. I really owe it all to her.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I currently own and operate a vending machine business. The special part about it is simple: I am my own boss. I’m able to create my own hours, build my own brand, and control things that most people are not able to. Those things include mottos, relationships, and most importantly time. I am free to work other jobs, spend time with my loved ones, and do more than someone that has a boss. I’m free. In vending, you’re able to let it be as passive as you would like. You can grow and scale at your own speed and also make a difference in multiple work environments in your community.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three main qualities I believe have been most impactful are having tough skin, having a deeper motivation than making money, and knowing what works best for you. You have to be able to hear “No” a lot more than you want to. You need to have something that pushes you other than making money. For me, it’s the desire to take care of the people I care about. It keeps me going everyday. Lastly, what works for me might not work for the next person. We can’t all be chefs in life’s kitchen. Some people might be better at waiting tables or building the actual restaurant.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
My biggest obstacle has been funding my business without always using personal funds. I work a regular job to support myself, so sometimes I have to come out of pocket for things. Since I started, I’ve learned more about the importance of credit and how it can help your business as well as your personal life. “Credit is king” is what I’ve been told many times. To some extent, this is true. Unless you have a huge saving accounts.
