Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Crystal Petry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Crystal, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
One of the first ways I have learned to be effective and successful in those rooms, is understanding that I deserve to be in every one I walk into. The space I occupy was not given to me, I earned it!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Those three skills are, advocating for myself, my confidence, and educating myself. These three skills have served me very well in every walk of my life. They all did not come at the same time and I had to work for them, but I know anything worth some effort is worth my time. If you are early in your journey, my best advice is to do the work in every skill. Once you feel like you have mastered all of them, keep working and keep mastering them. You change as you grow older and move in different spaces. So advocating for yourself will look and feel different. Your confidence will look and feel different. And educating yourself should be something you never master.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing, was to show me what not to do. If you know what not to do early on, the rest will come.
