Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to John Hanrahan. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi John, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
I run a unique fitness club called 55 Fitness – It is an innovative health club primarily designed to meet the needs of health conscious adults, 45 and older. We cater to a population group which other clubs neglect or ostracize. A group that when given the proper tools and direction can achieve an incredible improvement in quality of life, vitality, and longevity.
I’m the Director of our company’s flagship club, located in Alpharetta/ Roswell, GA (North Atlanta). I’m excited to work closely with the company founder, Brendan Skeen to bring my extensive fitness industry background to the mix as we create the best environment, and atmosphere for our 55 Fitness members.
One of the unique tools we offer to our members is the bioDensity training system which has a proven capability to improve bone density. Studies show that fifty percent of those over 50 have been shown to suffer injury due to fragility in skeletal strength. Our once weekly bioDensity training system is an effective safeguard against the effects of low bone density.
Another tool we exclusively offer is a system which helps our members easily navigate through our 12-Station Precor sectorized resistance stations. We set up each new member on our strength and cardio circuit line with their unique settings for each resistance training machine or cardio mode. New members meet for two complimentary training sessions and get their training routine set up so that on each future visit they are able to easily navigate through a workout with their personal settings, weight, reps and sets. We also offer the very best in Personal Training services.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a former multi-time NCAA All American athlete who studied exercise science at Penn State University. As an NSCA Strength & Conditioning Specialist I have worked over the years with prominent celebrities, professional/ Olympic athletes and regular population clients, all looking to get in peak or better condition. More recently I became certified by The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) as a credentialed EIM (Exercise Is Medicine) practitioner. I’m now part of a global health initiative founded by the ACSM and the AMA (American Medical Association). The vision of EIM is to make Physical Activity (PA) assessment and promotion a standard in clinical care, connecting health care and evidence-based PA resources for people everywhere and of all abilities.
Medical research on the positive effects of PA (Physical Activity) is now well founded as an integral component in the treatment of multiple health conditions.
I’ve joined the right team with 55 Fitness to carry out my mission. I try to practice what I preach in regards to conveying my fitness message to others. By winning the UWW World Wrestling Championship at age 56, I have been able to inspire others as to what is possible at any age.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
…OK good question. First of all, looking back I’m extremely grateful to have had an insightful education as a student-athlete at Penn State. I’d say that a few of the skills/ qualities that have gotten me along my path are: Preparation, Perseverance, Resiliency and Rapport. I’ll go through them one by one.
Preparation goes with education; it’s about doing the work so that you are more than adequately prepared to perform. Winners don’t get out-worked as they take on a goal, they put the extra work in to prepare. Just know that in the process you are putting distance between you and your competitors. My advice is to be in it to win it, but also enjoy the journey of climbing levels as you progress through your hard work and efforts.
Perseverance is the ability to push through the tough tasks and keep going to get the job done. It’s the ability to be relentless in your quest to rise-up the ranks in your chosen arena. Always choose self-confidence over self-pity, it will serve you well when you find yourself facing tough situations.
Be Resilient, there are bound to be setbacks and disappointments, that’s where resiliency comes into play. If you get knocked down, get up, and get stronger and wiser as you go forward.
As a young Personal Trainer, I was putting a physician client of mine through a session and she told me; “you are going to do very well, because you have great rapport with people”. I took that as a nice compliment and try to maintain that trait, I know it is part of what has gotten me to where I am. The first stage of Rapport is being able to put yourself in other’s shoes, gain empathy and have a sense of gratitude to be able to help or share meaningful moments with others.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Absolutely, we are on a mission to help bring 55 Fitness to your community. Our franchise network of facilities is expanding and may be a great opportunity for you to own a 55 Fitness club. If you are an entrepreneur with a passion to help others, make life changing improvements and interested in opening your own 55 Fitness facility, contact us for more information.
Our members are individuals who want to be at the peak of their game. 55 Fitness is more than just an exercise facility; it’s also a home away from home where mature adults can improve their overall health and wellness while surrounded by a supportive community of their peers. Our fitness centers focus on the specific needs of Baby Boomers and Older Adults by offering low impact machines, cardio equipment, the bioDensity system, state of the art technology, personal training, group workouts and socialization with their peers. We don’t just build muscles, we build friendships.
