Meet Kerriann Hammock

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kerriann Hammock. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kerriann below.

Kerriann, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

I do not believe in imposter syndrome and the only reason people do is because they have not accepted that we live in multitudes. Something it took me years to understand is how all of the things that makeup who I am could co-exist. For example, being a woman who is a nurturer and playful with her children while still being vivacious and attractive in other environments. Being a formidable business person, but also walking with compassion first. It is when I accepted that depending on the circumstance I could be any and all things that I put aside the notion of imposter syndrome.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

While running two brands can be confusing to some, I like to keep their brand stories from each quite clear. Violette Eve Candle Co, which is named after my child, is the sweet, softer side that brings harmony and calming scents to your home. Unruly Women Collective is definitely pushing boundaries, won’t be told no, and a bit more dangerous. Going back to living in multitudes we even see that through the different brands. With Unruly Women we are rooted in encouraging others to pursue their passions, whether it be entrepreneurial or something that feels their mind, body, and soul. We gather together at events to build our community and support one another.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three most important qualities to have are grit, compassion, and self-regulation as a business owner. Grit to see you through the challenges and disappointments that come with any endeavor. Compassion for others and for yourself. This will help establish your reputation as a professional that is sought after and that people want to be in business with. The self-regulation piece is crucial and often missed. As an entrepreneur, there is no one to hold you accountable and you must maintain that for yourself. Part of the self-regulation as an entrepreneur is that you cannot pursue every idea you have. Most failures occur when we stretch ourselves to thin and invest in different product or service offerings before perfecting another.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

Definitely, by far the book that has influenced me the most is The Obstacle is The Way by Ryan Holiday. It’s a current-day take on Stoicism that shares stories of the ancient stoics and the new. Living with the mindset that our perception of each situation is the determining factor of how events can truly impact us is a game changer. The reality that other people have been faced with far greater challenges than anything we are faced with in the world of convenience we live in can really level set your mind. I live by the latin term, Amor Fati, which means ‘the love of fate’ and I embrace whatever life is going to bring to me in an organic way. I never force anything and if my path starts to feel like it is littered with too many obstacles, I simply change course.
