We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Anna Trimmel. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Anna below.
Anna, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I am a very curious person by nature, therefore I’m always exploring shapes, textures, music and sounds, materials, even a new recipe can inspire me to create something artsy. I think in my case creativity has no boundaries nor limitations. There’s is a force in me since childhood that makes me want to at least try and see if I can make it myself before I buy it, and that has developed a strong urge to always be creating, from the most simple to sometimes more complex objects. I also surround myself with nature, music and plenty of ideas.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
It took me a while to accept that I was an artist, even though I’ve been very creative since early childhood and I actually went to art school in my 20’s, it’s just now in my 40’s that I can say it without feeling guilty about it. I am an artist, that’s what I do, there’s not a moment in my daily life that I don’t think about an idea, a new project, a new painting, or a new technique to try out. Everything I see is related to something very intimate and personal to me in the way I see things out there, call it a language if you want, a need to express without words but with feelings and awe.
At this moment in my life I’m happy with what I have discovered as an artist and the way I’m sharing my thoughts through my artworks, and the most exciting thing is that people react to it, I see people engage with my work and that is an intense feeling for me of euphoria, makes me want to create more and more. Professionally I’m at a point where I never thought I would be and that’s people recognizing my style, knowing it came from me before seeing my signature and that is overwhelming and humbling at the same time, specially after so many years of hard-work and skill polishing. I’m just really happy I get to do what I do and have been able to convert my passion into my job.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Patience tops the list, nothing can be rushed. It has taken time for me to develop the skills I have now. Next to patience is consistency, to show up, to keep going, to not giving up when things look flat or difficult. And last but not least the connection with yourself, this is so important, I needed to understand why I needed to paint, it came from a necessity to express my feelings and thoughts in another way because words where somehow frustrating for me, so I went deep into understanding myself in many ways and accepting I had a different language, then when I decided to take this as a career and a business I had to develop patience and of course be consistent and study, practice, keep trying, do it again, and that way all three of these skills became my strongest tools.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
I get easily overwhelmed, daily life as a human being is already stressful enough and the environment, work, money, health, family, social media, politics and everything else is just too loud; what I do is cry to let it physically out of me and then breathe deeply, as a meditation, just breathe in and out for a good 10 or 20 minutes, then I go to tend my little garden, my plants are like babies to me and taking care of them brings me calm and joy. Once I’ve done this my flow of creativity and inner peace are working again.
We are told too often not to waste time crying, but I think it’s actually the best thing we can do, if we don’t let it out with tears every once in a while then we get angry and more frustrated and more overwhelmed. In any case, it’s important to develop a meditative system to decompress because we tend to accumulate too much energy and stress. For me it’s to cry, breathe and sit in the garden with my plants.
