We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marilena Patouni. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marilena below.
Marilena, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
To keep my creativity alive in a dynamic digital industry where technology constantly pushes boundaries, I immerse myself in a blend of innovation and human experience. Staying on top of the latest technological advancements is crucial, so I frequently experiment with cutting-edge tools, platforms, and digital trends. However, true creativity for me comes from much more than just technology.
I believe that creativity thrives on contrast. I deliberately seek out experiences beyond the digital sphere—visiting art galleries, spending time in nature or even traveling. This “offline” inspiration allows my mind to make unexpected connections, blending technology with more human, artistic elements.
Traveling is one of my greatest sources of inspiration. Exploring new cultures, meeting people from diverse backgrounds, and experiencing their traditions firsthand broadens my worldview and injects fresh energy into my work. Whether I’m wandering through a bustling market in Marrakech, discovering local craftsmanship in Greece, or soaking in the architectural wonders of a new city, these encounters shape my creative process. I bring back unique perspectives, stories, and visual influences that I weave into my digital strategies, allowing me to create authentic, globally resonant content.
This combination of staying tech-savvy and drawing from the richness of human experience keeps my creativity not only alive but thriving. Stepping outside the digital bubble enables me to craft digital experiences that are as rich and diverse as the world itself.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a digital creative with a rich background in luxury marketing, e-commerce, and project management.
Originally from Greece, my journey took me to Boston, one of the most international cities in the world, before moving to New York. This global experience has enriched my cultural perspective and professional approach.
My career includes prestigious roles at major luxury companies and collaborations with renowned brands and designers like Temple St. Clair, Stone & Strand, Net A Porter and many more.
Currently leading the digital presence and global e-commerce strategies at Assouline, I also dedicate time to helping emerging brands such as Laroot World and Elina Afentaki Jewellery grow their digital presence from the ground up.
My expertise fuses cutting-edge digital strategies with a keen insight into consumer behavior and brand identity, crafting dynamic and resonant online experiences through a uniquely creative lens.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful are:
1. Adaptability: The ability to adjust to new technologies, market trends, shifting consumer behaviors and even environments has been crucial. Embracing change rather than resisting it has allowed me to stay relevant and effective.
Advice: Be open to learning and adapting. Stay updated with industry trends, be willing to pivot when necessary, and seek feedback to refine your approach.
2. Cross-disciplinary Knowledge: Combining marketing principles with psychological insights and business strategies has given me a comprehensive perspective on consumer behavior and effective strategies. This integration has been invaluable in creating impactful digital strategies.
Advice: Invest time in learning about different fields related to your primary focus. For instance, if you’re in marketing, understanding psychology, data analytics, or even design can enhance your strategic thinking and execution.
3. Networking and Relationship Building: Building strong connections within the industry has opened doors to collaborations, opportunities, and insights that might not have been accessible otherwise. Cultivating these relationships has played a significant role in my career progression.
Advice: Focus on networking with intention. Attend industry events, engage with professionals on social media, and participate in relevant communities. Building genuine relationships can provide valuable opportunities and support throughout your career.
For those early in their journey, investing in continuous learning, staying adaptable, and actively building a professional network will set a strong foundation for growth and success.
