We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Jordan Stander. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Jordan below.
Jordan , thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
I’ve been given the ultimate gift, one that I can never truly pay back. I’ve been given freedom, forgiveness, mercy, and grace. I’ve been given unconditional love, and a peace of mind that surpasses all understanding. I believe with all my heart that the one who created me, sacrificed himself on a rescue mission, to save me – ultimately from myself – from the worst parts of me, the parts that choose myself over everything and everyone else. He loved me before I knew he existed, and died in place of me before I even acknowledged him – a testament of true love. Because of what Jesus did for me, I have changed. The knowledge and understanding of who he is and what he did cut me to my most inner core, and his Spirit has guided me since then. His Spirit is generous. The generosity you see in me, is actually his light shining through. In the past I was generous for my own sake – for my good name and my reputation – that is selfish at its core, and so is not truly generous since it is self seeking. I’ll never be able to do enough to repay what Jesus has done, and is still doing, for me. Because of this, there is nothing I can earn, therefore any generosity you see now is true generosity and stems from the one who created generosity and shows it daily – Jesus. I just get to be the tool he uses, and oh what a feeling to know you are being used for good by the creator of the universe!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I invented a product called the Tub Topper. It’s the first bathtub splash guard and play shelf of its kind. It suctions on to the bathtub edge, and lets kids play with theirs toys and water on the edge of the tub, while all the water is directed back into the bathtub and not out on the floor.
I’m a dad, husband, and run Tub Topper full time. It was built from nothing, and had been a testament to the American Dream still being alive. If someone wants to risk everything and build a company from scratch, you still have the opportunity to try it in this country. While it’s not easy, nor is the road the same for everyone, it’s possible.
Currently we are selling in our 3rd full year, and sales have continued to climb rapidly each year. We are learning as we go. We listen to customers concerns and try to make adjustments as we go. Because of the customers, we recently upgraded our main product to be more universal in its fit on bathtubs. We’re also about to release our second product, the Tub Topper Mini, due to customer demand. Last year we came out with 3 new colors. We are very excited to see what the next step is, and how we can better serve our customers across the globe.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
You have to believe it’s possible. Most people don’t get past that step. Every single thing you see that was created by man, was once just an idea in someone’s head. If you don’t believe it’s possible, you’ll never have what it takes to see it through. It’s hard, and everything will be stacked against you, including yourself. That small little voice that says “come on, you think you can actually do that, or become that?” It’s a lie to keep you safe and comfortable. There’s no safety and comfort in growth. You’ll have to conquer yourself first. That will be your biggest fight.
Persistence and/or grit is needed next. Every journey starts with one step…then another…then another. That’s all it is. 10,000 small steps. No leaps, just one step after another. Take the next step. The two most powerful tools are – consistency and time. If you let those two play out, you’ll look up one day and see how far you’ve come from taking one small step at a time. So, figure out what the next step is for you, and take it. Then take the next one.
Learn as you go, and understand that success is just the outcome of not quitting. You can only fail if you quit. Everything else is just a learning curve. You will only get better by taking shots. Not all shots will go in, but you’ll learn from the shots that don’t, and you can make adjustments. The more shots you take, the better you’ll get. You will never succeed if you are too afraid to take shots and miss. News flash – you will miss shots! Everyone who tries does. So what! I’d rather play the game and miss a bunch of shots in order to make a few, than not play the game at all.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
Learn to enjoy learning. Learning is the key. It’s how babies go from crawling to walking, to running. They test, they learn, they make adjustments, they test again – then one day, it all comes together. This is designed in us. Curiosity about entrepreneurs and learning how they did it gave me the confidence to try. I wouldn’t have known they are just like any other human, and didn’t know what they were doing at first. Learning is what got me from an idea to a business that will do multiple millions of dollars in sales this year.
You have to be curious and want to learn. Be curious about everything. We have so much knowledge in our pockets these days with the internet on our phones, yet we consistently complain about not knowing how to do something. It’s because we don’t want to take the time and effort to learn. Do it. It will pay off. As you continue on your journey it’ll be extremely important for you to learn about new things. You will always hit a wall in your knowledge and experience. When that happens start researching, learning, testing, and adjusting. This is the only way to move forward. But it starts with the curiously, and a desire to learn what you don’t know. Be curious and learn!
