Meet Chef Kathy Katz

We recently connected with Chef Kathy Katz and have shared our conversation below.

Chef Kathy, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I feel like I genuinely connect easily with people. They quickly feel very comfortable around me and in return I love sharing my love of cooking with them. When you have a true passion for something, I believe that it makes it easier and more confident that you simply want to share it with everyone!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I was extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend Culinary School for my “midlife crisis!” A middle aged woman taking a new journey hoping to succeed professionally.

I am currently private cheffing for families in Los Angeles. With the ever changing seasonal foods, customizing menus, keeping creative tastes and artistic plating is so important to me.

My service’s include in-home cheffing, tasting-menus, hands-on culinary parties and I also teach culinary classes at the Violet Bistro in Westwood.

I have made one guest chef appearances for film/tv productions and I am looking forward to many more culinary experiences and opportunities to expand the reach of my brand.

I try to give back to my community monthly with my “mitzvah meals”. I donate dinners to members of surrounding Synagogues that could use some extra TLC due to illness or family struggles.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Passion, motivation and commitment. These are skills you must have within yourself! I also grew up with amazing women in my family that paved my way around the kitchen making it fun, exciting and flavorful!

I want to serve as a role model and mentor to other women of all ages who are interested in starting their own business, particularly in the culinary industry.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
This is a great question! I pick it for many people in my life who have supported me through my culinary journey. First and foremost my husband, he really pushes me when I may have a doubt or any hesitation to challenge myself to do something outside of my comfort zone. I also turn to other chefs, groups and platforms in the food industry to continuously find ideas, support and listen how others in the culinary world navigate.
