Meet Angel Mae Glutz

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angel Mae Glutz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angel Mae below.

Hi Angel Mae, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I realized, at a very early age, that I was a different sort of person. It was when I tried to fit in that there was no place for me. I was odd and only by embracing my oddness was I able to make any friends as a kid. Art and learning were all I cared about in my youth and when I poured myself into my passions, I excelled. The true friendships I cultivated by being genuine and the praise I received for my art and academics were inspiring. I thought, “I’m the only me this world is gonna get so I better give it my best.” When you truly give your all to everything you do, success is the natural next step. When you look at life as a series of little successes (and some big ones) the confidence and self-esteem come naturally.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the senior artist at Coven, my newly opened fine art and tattoo studio. I am most excited about it because it is located less than 10 miles from the neighborhood where I grew up on the westside of Jacksonville. What makes it so special is that the studio is more community and art focused. So, when you come in, it’s a bit different than your typical tattoo shop. The entire front half of the store front is used as studio space for traditional art. We have a “featured artist” wall that changes monthly to feature different local talent. We’ve got a lot of big plans for the future, including hosting sip and paint date nights, art jams, art classes, stitching groups and more.

Our Grand Opening Event is scheduled from 2pm to 9pm on the 15th of July. We are going to have artist vendors in the parking lot, discounts on art in the studio, coupons for discounts on future tattoos, and more.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
In my journey, seeing things through, giving them my best effort, and always being open to learning have had the biggest impact. When I start a project, no matter how long it takes or how daunting it may seem, I don’t stop until it is finished. Putting that best effort forth every single time creates consistency and growth; both of which are essential to gaining new clients and retaining the ones you have. I see a lot of my peers, as I get older, kind of settle into their ways. Settling creates a rigidity to thinking that cannot help but spill over into the art. When this happens, it almost seems like a skill regression. Learning is essential to a lengthy career in any creative field.

If someone is early in their art career, I would say the best way to develop or improve on these things is simply make things. Every day, make something. Give it your all. Got 5 minutes and can only draw stick people? Cool! Let me see the absolute best stick man you can draw in 5 minutes! That’s it. That’s all it takes. If you start and finish even a little something every day, the rest comes naturally.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
My studio, Coven, is always looking for local artists, artisans, creatives, or art groups to feature on our front wall. Our only stipulations are that you are over 18 year of age (as we do not allow minors in the studio) and that you are able to transport and price your art yourself. If interested, simply email [email protected] with “Featured Artist Inquiry” in the subject to find out more.
