Meet Larry Silver

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Larry Silver. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Larry below.

Larry, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

My resilience comes from my upbringing as a child. We had to make things work, even if certain resources were off for the moment (internet, cable, lights, etc.) to cut back on costs. I can recall going to work with my mom in the evenings to help out instead of playing with other kids. These places and situations pushed me in later years to count every win, blessing, and opportunity I received because I did experience having to go without certain comforts or privileges that others may ignore. I’ve learned that obstacles are not just happening to me – but for me- in order to evolve.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a visual artist that captures the aesthetics of black figures embracing their image. I use my art as a tool to bring people together to think critically about the world around them by creating compositions with surrealistic narratives and portraits using oil paint and charcoal drawings. The goal of my work is to use my visual voice amongst others as a blueprint to connect on a higher vibration for people to see themselves and feel empowered. With 15 years under my belt, honing my craft as an artist from Alabama, I’ve been honored to have my work reach media platforms and exhibitions from Alabama, Wisconsin, Mississippi, Louisiana to Atlanta. I also had an art piece featured in Apasso Ghana. Art was always innately in me as a child. It was there before I knew that it was called art. I started off being inspired by cartoons and comic characters and branched into drawing and painting real life figures to connect with people on a deeper level. The language of art inspires me to use my visual voice to communicate with others beyond words. The importance of “being” tells a story in many ways from facial expressions, figure position and abstract elements of nature. The youthful curiosity of creating is what I held onto as my foundation. Today, I continue to create and be a part of the artist community, spreading the importance of art and sharing my gifts through interactions with clients, being engaged in art panels, media opportunities and exhibitions.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The three qualities that impacted my artistry the most are: Courage, Consciousness, and Consistency.

Being courageous is the first step in building a foundation to a new idea, executing a challenging piece and embracing the unknown.
Consciousness is important for being aware of my surroundings and what is being communicated through what I perceive. Consistency is having the discipline to keep showing up to my craft, strengthening my connection and knowledge.

– One of the main lesson I’ve learned in this journey as an artist is being confident in standing alone even when no one else sees your vision. And that’s not just on the paper or canvas, but outside of it as well. Taking yourself seriously when others around you don’t. I think every artist at some point experiences that obstacle, but it’s an obstacle that’s also a gift. If you can overcome it, you’ll have a better understanding of yourself and be able to trust yourself completely.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

The alchemist. This book reconfirmed my life’s work because of how much I relate to it. In your search for treasure, you realize the journey itself is the treasure because without that journey you would have not become who you are and found those you love. The treasure is the life you live.
