We recently connected with Sergio Carrasco and have shared our conversation below.
Sergio, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
My resilience comes from my mother. When she arrived in this country, she didn’t know the language, and shortly after, my father—her husband—was tragically murdered when I was just two years old. Despite battling depression and facing the immense challenges of being in a foreign land without support, she never gave up. She worked two jobs, ensuring we always had a roof over our heads and food on the table. No matter how hard life became, she persevered. Whenever I face difficulties, I reflect on her strength and sacrifices, and I push forward. Starting a business, especially when you’re navigating the unknown, can be tough, but I draw inspiration from her resilience every step of the way. She’s the reason I never give up.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am an ESL teacher with experience in bilingual education, and I founded my own tutoring company to support students who share a similar background to mine. Coming from an immigrant family, I know the challenges firsthand, and I want to ensure they don’t face the same struggles I did. My goal is to help them succeed, using the lessons I’ve learned from my own journey.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience , Empathy , and Adaptability. Teaching is not for everyone, a lot of teachers take it as a job. It isn’t, it’s a calling. If you do not have those three skills, it wil be a rough journey.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. There is a quote that I always go back to if I ever feel regret or don’t want to pursue something that I because of fear. “ And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.” This quote keeps me going.
