We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Pyae Pying a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
PYAE, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
The way I maintain creativity is by collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds and fields, which brings fresh perspectives and ideas. I avoid sticking to conventional thinking, break away from traditional thought patterns, and explore new solutions. Bold imagination, along with the courage to experiment and adapt, allows me to find innovative directions through constant trial and adjustment.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am L.A. based Production Designer, Art Director. My work is to bring the scenes and emotions of a story to life through visual art. What excites me the most is the uniqueness of each project and the limitless potential for creativity. Every film requires a new world to be imagined, and my job is to help build these worlds, whether set in the past, present, or future, in reality or fantasy.
I want people to understand that production design is more than just setting up scenes and designing props; it’s about telling a story through visual language. By using color, texture, and space, we enhance the audience’s emotional and narrative experience.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most important qualities and skills in my journey have been maintaining a positive mindset, which has allowed me to stay motivated and resilient through challenges, fostering strong collaboration and clear communication with directors, cinematographers, and other team members to bring creative visions to life, and embracing problem-solving and flexibility, in any creative process, challenges will arise—whether it’s budget constraints, time limitations, or unforeseen changes. The ability to think on your feet and creatively solve problems is a key part of production design. For those just beginning, take on projects that challenge you. Experiment with limited resources, improvise, and learn how to stay flexible when things don’t go as planned.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m looking to connect and collaborate with production designers, art directors, and set decorators to gain more hands-on experience and broaden my creative horizons. I’m eager to learn from different designers and set decorators, as I believe working alongside experienced professionals will help me refine both my skills and creative approach. I’m passionate about engaging with others who share a love for creating visually compelling stories, and I’m always open to exchanging ideas and exploring new projects. If you’re interested in collaborating or connecting, I’d love to hear from you!
