We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Samuel Henneberg a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Samuel, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Growing up my parents had always taught me about the importance of education, and more importantly following my dreams to become whatever I was passionate about. At 18 I left home 3,000 miles across the world to study and play soccer in the USA which was both challenging, and exciting! Throughout my college life and start of my professional working career, I was constantly in limbo about my career path and what I wanted to do, along with who I wanted to become. I wanted to be involved in soccer but wasn’t good enough to play professionally, and didn’t have motivation to be a coach. I started working in the corporate world and was feeling unfulfilled. I then started to run showcases and network in the soccer world which helped me find my purpose of both being involved with soccer, running a business, making important decisions and creating meaningful relationships.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
At Select Generation, we assist soccer players in reaching the next step in their career. We provide exposure and opportunities for players who are under the radar, and in need of tactical, technical, physical and mental development with our European residency programs. If a player is good enough, we believe they can be connected at either the college, or pro level regardless of their background. We enjoy working with elite level players and getting to know them on a personal level, only working with a select core group of players.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
For Select Generation, the most important skill for our brand has been our honesty and understanding approach to reaching our long term goals. We want to see players eventually in the MLS, premier league, la liga etc and representing their countries on a national stage. But we knew that wasn’t going to happen in year 1! We don’t want to be a hit and hope platform where we work with 1,000 players and hope that one gets placed at a top program. We would rather vet a select group of players and identify them closely, to ensure we are giving coaches the best recommendations.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Over the past 12 months we have invested a lot in our marketing, branding and trying to really have a strong presence with our online image. We want to be elite with the players we work with and coaches who trust us for recommendations, so we understand that our online image is important to us for gaining trust as we are still a young company with many more goals to reach. Our audience is spending a lot of time on social media for example, so it is important for us to implement strategies to target good players and build their personal brand as Select Generation Athletes.
