Meet Paul Murphy

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Paul Murphy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Paul, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

From an early age, I was dedicated to playing music. My parents highly encouraged me to get the right teachers to advance my skills. I was lucky that my 2 brothers also played guitar, and we instantly started a band playing cover songs and then writing our own songs. After playing and recording original music in the studio for many years, a good friend whom became a Program Director and a college recruited me to teach Music Technology. This was a paradigm shift in my life and career. This was truly a finding of my calling and purpose. Teaching is truly who I am. Imparting the knowledge, skills, techniques, and above all the dream and love of music is what inspires and motivates me each day working with incredibly passion driven students.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

The essence of who I am is being a Music Technology Teacher, which is a blend of teaching how to write original hit making songs, compositions and Recording Engineering. My focus these last few decades has been the building and developing a Music Technology Institute called
in-Studio Music Technology Institute located in Orland Park, Illinois. This accomplishment has been a dream come true. The team that built and founded our Post Secondary Approved Institute is Timothy Grossi, Slavic Livins, Paul Murphy, and Laura Murray, whom are a highly experienced team of studio owners, grammy award winning engineers, and experienced post-secondary teachers. Also recently joining the team is TJ Helmerich with his vast experience as a top industry audio engineer and music technology instructor of many decades.

The Music Technology program we offer to our students develops their abilities into effective and successful music producers, recording engineers, and song writers. Some of our students are working successfully in the music industry making and composing music. Students are also recording many records in the studio and performing their songs live on the stages across the state and country. We have also been thrilled to witness students building their own successful recording studios.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The deep desire to learn, create, and perform music. Receiving education and training from talented music teachers made all the difference in my abilities to write, perform, and teach music and recording engineering. A true and important phrase, I once heard, that has been so true in my life is this, “Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future”. I have been extremely fortunate to have made friends that have advanced my journey immensely. My wife Laura whom has given me the keys to my dreams, by being there for me, supporting me in every-day life and contributing to the building of the Music Technology Institute that has developed into an Approved Post Secondary School. Timothy Grossi studio owner, incredible musician whom is sage, mentor, systematic thinker and doer and a true friend, Slavic Livins top grammy engineer whom is an example of talented and creative technical expertise, follow through, motivation and true friend, TJ Helmerich, a highly talented musician, engineer, and teacher whom believed in me from day one and recruited me to teach Music Technology many decades ago. I also have a loving and supportive family that has always been there for me, my two brothers Alan and Walter, whom are talented musicians and life-long friends. Whom you surround yourself around will become your destiny. My advice to folks early in your journey is to be disciplined in your learning and creating music and to surround yourself with positive successful destiny changing people.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

As I previously mentioned there are friends and family in my life that have truly given me the resources, and opportunities to become successful. My parents provided me with guidance, education and love. My brothers with playing in bands together, motivating each other to always succeed in a humble and driven way. My incredible wife, whom is always looking out for my best interests in my life and business. My business partners and friends, Timothy, Slavic, Tj, sharing incredible opportunities, wisdom, business plans, technical ideas and resources. The above family and friends have been essential in the quality level and knowledge I needed to become part of a successful Music Technology Institute that is getting student results in the writing and making of songs and records.
