Meet Alison Cordero

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alison Cordero a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Alison, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

I let creativity find me in my everyday life. I know when I try to sit down and force an idea it usually backfires and I get frustrated. I try to do things I enjoy, spend time with people I enjoy and give myself space from my work from time to time in order to be more present. Being present allows me to gather inspiration and channel it in a way that is authentic to me. This has worked for me so far.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I am a wood and mixed media artist. I design and handcraft original pieces of wood art – wall art as well as various pieces of home décor. I love playing wood against different mediums. Currently my collections consist of all-wood designs as well as wood pieces fitted alongside plaster and mosaic mirror tiles –this makes for a fun experience. There is no limit for what you can do with wood and that’s how I see the future of my art. I’ve recently created necklaces with wood pendants as well as a new design for an original chess board, one that really put my hands to the test, but I love how it came out. I also have a new idea I’m working on, using another medium alongside wood, so stay tuned for that!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Now, I don’t necessarily practice these all the time, but I’ve learned that this combo helps me a lot: delusion, curiosity, audacity. Delusion, to dream and think beyond anything you expect. Curiosity to wonder and question. The audacity to venture out, take risks and ask all those questions you’ve gathered to anyone willing to listen and share their knowledge- and then just apply all of it as you see fit for you.

Just remember, there is no limit to what you can do, whether its art or another skill you’re developing. There is only a vision and the commitment you have to it

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

My biggest challenge right now is applying this new idea I’m working on. As in prior experiences I know there’s a process and it’s a lot of trial and error. So, I’m just trying to be patient and remember that with a new method and medium there is a lot of new learning involved – which also helps keep things exciting.
