Meet Angelique James

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Angelique James. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Angelique below.

Angelique, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

Life has not always been easy for me. I’ve always had to fight for my values and fight for my voice to be heard! The more I evolve as a creative – the more I see how important it is for me to make a statement and to stand firm in my beliefs and creativity.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a designer/Stylist living in Phoenix Arizona! I upcycle clothing by redirecting texture, quality and fluidity of a former piece and making it fresh and new. The most exciting thing about being in fashion is that it is limitless. There is no right or wrong in fashion and I love pushing boundaries to create unique statement pieces. What I want people to know about my brand is that anybody can wear my designs – no matter what age, size or ethnicity. Fashion is a way to bring everyone together! I will be one of the wardrobe Stylists this year for AZFW (AZ Fashion Week) and plan to be a designer next year presenting my first collection!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I have watched every fashion show on TV you can think of! It’s in my blood and it continues to inspire me. I love to see how like-minded designers work. It’s a language we all share. For skills, I have coproduced events in the past, as well as a fashion show, that helps me know the ins and outs of fashion. My advice for anyone wanting to break into the industry is consistency. Don’t stop creating no matter what you do. If you have a goal in mind to create a certain look – go for it and don’t let anyone or anything stop you from achieving that goal! You never know who’s watching and observing your work. All it takes is the right person to discover you to bring you to success.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I am open to collaborations! I will never be to successful enough to knock down any creative no matter how big or small. The collaborators I’m looking for are unique like me that have a distinct point of view and they are fearless!
