We were lucky to catch up with Jake Schneider recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Jake, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I developed my confidence and self-esteem through hard work and studying. The last few years, I’ve been going out to new locations, reading more, studying composition, and learning about other film photographer work flow and style. It was a bit of a struggle at first, but over time and taking more photos for different clients, I was able to build up that confidence in what I do. I trust myself more when it comes to the technical aspects of a photo.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Great question! I just love taking photos on film. There is this special thing that happens when you finish the roll, take it home, and hand develop it in your bathroom! I’m just a big fan of the process!
I’ve personally have been working on making prints available, and have been leaning more towards getting my photos into galleries. It’s been a little difficult, but I have had a couple spots in local libraries that have been offered to me, very excited to get those into motion!
I did want to mention as well, but I was recently contracted by our local parks district to be their photographer, which is huge for me! The support I received for this was incredible, and I am very thankful for it! I’ve also been hired for multiple jobs here and there from around our local town.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’d say:
Determination, being adaptable, and loving what you do!
My advice, keep working, don’t quit on what project you are working on. The more you work on something, the better you become at the end of the day!

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I’d say my biggest area that I’ve seen is better work flow, better photos, and reaching out to new people. That has always been trouble to me, and I’d say since the start of 2024, I’ve been a lot better in this area!
