Hi Cali , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

Being the only one in the room that looks like you can be challenging, but it has also been a source of strength for me as an African American. I’ve learned that success in those moments comes from embracing the uniqueness of my perspective and using it as an advantage. It’s about recognizing that diversity isn’t just a box to check—it’s a strength that brings fresh ideas and different experiences.

I’ve become effective by being unapologetically myself, staying authentic, and making sure my voice is heard, even when it feels uncomfortable. Over time, I’ve honed the ability to navigate those spaces confidently by developing emotional intelligence, understanding the dynamics at play, and building relationships that transcend superficial differences.

I also lean on the community outside of the room—mentors, peers, and other professionals who support me and remind me that I belong in any space I enter. This support system has been key in reinforcing my confidence and helping me persevere in moments of doubt. Lastly, I remind myself that my presence in the room, by itself, is already a step toward breaking barriers, and I take that responsibility seriously by striving to excel and inspire others to do the same.

I’m Cali Bam, the CEO of More Money Than Yesterday (MMTY), and what we do is at the intersection of music, film, and fashion. MMTY is all about pushing culture forward by empowering artists, creators, and visionaries to own their narratives. We focus on providing a platform where independent artists can thrive, bringing their raw talent to the forefront without compromising their authenticity. Our mission is to give these artists the tools and opportunities to elevate their craft on their terms.

What excites me most about MMTY is that we’re not just another label or production house—we’re a movement. We’re building something bigger than entertainment. We’re fostering a community where everyone involved can shine, whether it’s through music, fashion, or film. The creative energy we bring is unmatched, and it’s reflected in everything we do. Our partnership with Empire allows us to expand our reach while still maintaining full control of our vision.

One of the most special aspects of what we do is our dedication to lifting up artists who might not have had the chance to be heard. Whether it’s artists like we’re all about showcasing talent that’s slept on. We’ve recently expanded into more global projects, like our 32-artist showcase mixtape from Miccheck Wynwood, which features talent from all over the world, showing that MMTY is about unity through creativity.

In terms of what’s next, we have a lot in the works. We’re constantly expanding, whether it’s through new artist signings or creative ventures. We’re also diving deeper into fashion, with plans to launch exclusive MMTY apparel that reflects our culture and attitude. This is just the beginning for us, and I want folks to know that MMTY isn’t just a brand—it’s a lifestyle and a legacy in the making. Keep an eye out, because we’re only going to get bigger from here.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back on my journey, three qualities have been particularly impactful: resilience, networking, and a commitment to continuous learning.

1. Resilience: The entertainment industry can be unpredictable, and setbacks are inevitable. Cultivating resilience has allowed me to navigate challenges without losing sight of my goals. I encourage those early in their journey to embrace failure as a learning opportunity. Developing a growth mindset helps you bounce back stronger and more determined.
2. Networking: Building meaningful connections has opened countless doors for me. It’s essential to surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your vision or can offer different perspectives. I recommend actively engaging in communities—whether online or in person—related to your interests. Attend events, reach out to mentors, and don’t be afraid to introduce yourself. Authentic relationships can lead to collaborations and support systems that are invaluable.
3. Continuous Learning: The landscape of entertainment is always evolving, so staying informed about trends, technologies, and industry practices is crucial. I prioritize continuous education, whether through workshops, reading, or hands-on experiences. For those just starting, set aside time each week to learn something new—be it a skill related to your craft or insights about the industry. This not only sharpens your abilities but also keeps you adaptable in a fast-paced environment.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?

Yes, I believe it’s better to go all in on our strengths, while also being mindful of the need for a certain level of versatility. Focusing on what we do best allows us to maximize our potential and create a strong personal brand. When you hone in on your strengths, you not only become more proficient but also stand out in a crowded market.

Investing effort into improving weaker areas can be beneficial, but it’s crucial to approach it strategically. For instance, in my journey with MMTY, I recognized early on that my strength lies in understanding the music industry and cultivating talent. I chose to focus on these areas rather than spreading myself too thin trying to master every aspect of the business. This focus enabled me to build a robust network and attract talented artists who complement my skills, ultimately creating a synergistic effect.

However, I also realized that some foundational skills, like basic financial literacy and digital marketing, were essential for my overall effectiveness. I made it a point to improve in these areas, but I didn’t let them detract from my core strengths. Instead, I sought out team members with expertise in those fields, allowing me to focus on leading and visioning while still covering all bases.

A relevant story is when we launched our 32-artist showcase mixtape. My strength in talent management and artist development allowed me to curate a diverse lineup that represented various genres and cultures. I delegated tasks like marketing and logistics to team members who excelled in those areas. This approach not only ensured the project was executed seamlessly but also showcased the unique strengths of each team member, leading to a successful launch that resonated with a global audience.

In conclusion, while it’s important to be aware of and improve upon weaker areas, dedicating yourself to your strengths can lead to greater success and fulfillment. Focus on what you do best, and surround yourself with people who can complement your skill set. This combination creates a powerful dynamic that fosters growth and innovation.
