We were lucky to catch up with Sick Serenity recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sick, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
We started back in 2018 with humble beginnings, in a small garage in Hillsboro, Ohio! Our first full album we titled: ‘All In’ as an ode to our dedication and resilience to stay true to ourselves and to give it our all. Now we are releasing our best material yet, recorded with the best in the business. Our new music, recorded at Sonic Lounge Studios in Grove City is our best work to date and after six years is testament to our resilience as a band.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
We are focused on creating driving Modern Rock, with a twist of Grunge and Alternative Metal. We pride ourselves in creating an experience for our live listeners. Looking back on our year this year, we toured with Fender Staxx of Green Jelly. We opened up for Trapt, Smile Empty Soul and Hed PE. We were featured in Venom Magazine. Performed at festivals like the Harvested Here Festival in Hillsboro, OH, a couple of charity events including one coming up October 12th to raise money for Music Beats Cancer and much much more! We are also in the month of October (19th at the Madison Theater) opening for Adema, One Day Alive and ENMY for Venom Magazine’s Rocktober! Our new single, ‘Alone’ is out on all platforms now and we will have two more coming out sometime this year or early next year!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities or skills that have made the most impact for us is our Drive, Perseverance and ability to make connections. That last one is really the biggest and the most important for ones that are just starting out on this kind of journey. When we first started, I made giant lists of EVERY venue in a drivable distance.. Every bar that has music, every county fair, festivals, motorcycle rallies and everything else you can think of. That’s what it takes.. Develop good advertisement pieces to catch the eye of your would-be clients, make your emails stand out and contact everyone in the game. Eventually, if you’re good enough, word of mouth will start to flow and you will have to do less of this. And when you make a connection, treat it like gold. Don’t burn bridges and keep in contact with anyone who can help you along the way. Explore every avenue.
Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
Both! Like I’ve kind of mentioned, we go “ALL IN” on our strengths for sure, but I’ve seen a lot of bands get comfortable and not try things outside the box. Have to be willing to not only try different things, but also work on improving every aspect of your craft. Whether that be actually practicing your instrument, pushing your boundaries on writing and recording, or even just lighting, sound, booking.. You have to do it all nowadays. No one’s going to do it for you!
