Meet Sara Kakatsch

We were lucky to catch up with Sara Kakatsch recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

My Mom was the person who suggested I look in to making a career out of what I did for fun. I was kind of lost for awhile. Thankfully I have supportive parents who gave me the confidence I needed to spread my wings. With time in this career it developed in to my purpose. A haircut seems like a minor or trivial thing in life but if you think about it, it’s not. Before most special moments you get a haircut. Baby’s first, picture day, school dances, graduation, job interviews, marriage purposals, weddings, and the list goes on. I get to be part of the special, important moments. I love being able to help people feel beautiful, handsome, confident and all the good things in between.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m an armybrat but i mostly grew up in Oshkosh WI. I’m the oldest of 3 kids. My Mom nicknamed me her “Girl Friday” when i was a kid. Most times when her and my Dad needed help with my siblings or around the house i was the “go to” like most oldest siblings. I wanted my brand to be an ode to my Mom who encouraged me to persue this career, Fades by Friday was born in 2023. My main focus is to always make sure that the people who sit in my chair feel comfortable and leave feeling confident and happy. I’m a Barber/Stylist by trade, others would agree to another title being “under paid therapist”. My co-workers and I maintain an inclusive environment within the salon. We want everyone to feel welcome. Our salon is eclectic and has odd ball things that are us as a collective. We’re fun and easy going and sometimes messy and that’s ok.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I’m thankful that I have had some managers through my career that I could learn from. When I worked in Oshkosh I had the privilege of working with some really awesome people. We had a work family that I will always strive towards having/creating again. The salon I work in now has that feeling again. I look forward to coming in to work. I’m not just excited to see my clients but I look forward to seeing my co-workers every day. I would say the 3 things I have always tried to keep in mind are; Learning is essential to stay relevant, always stay true to myself and what I represent and to listen to hear not listen to respond. My advice to those who are looking to start a business. Be confident in yourself and your biggest advocate. Don’t be afraid to fail and know your worth. Don’t be afraid to ask whatever the question is including why. The worst answer you can get is no but you will never know until you ask.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My Family. My Mom suggested I go to school and invested in my business when I was getting it off the ground. My parents and my siblings have offered words of encouragement and have told me they’re proud of my accomplishments. My husband has always been supportive of whatever it is I set my mind to. He was the person who suggested I go in to business for myself when I was debating on my next career move. He drove me to the salon where I met my coworker Jessi and ultimately ended up opening shop at. My kids, family, friends and clients have all rallied around me, whether it’s hyping me up on social media, or showing up to events for the salon and recommending me to other friends and their co-workers. My fellow stylists and management I’ve had in the past have given me many learning lessons. Some of it good, some of it bad, either way it offers a way to grow as a person and a professional. My co-worker Jessi helped me start my business by telling me where to go online and helped me with gathering the necessary information I needed to successfully start my LLC. She has been a big part of my journey and helping me keep confidence.
