We were lucky to catch up with Heidi Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.
Heidi, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding my purpose has been a journey shaped by many different experiences. Early in my life, I had a strong desire to explore art and design, but my path took a few detours. I left behind a career to follow my husband’s career opportunities, which required moving frequently. Each new place we lived gave me the chance to see how different styles, cultures, and spaces could inspire creativity. Eventually, we settled in Texas and soon after, my two children were old enough to be in school. That’s when I knew it was time to follow my own lifelong dream of becoming an entrepreneur Flamingo Rodeo Interiors was born.
This business is more than just a way to express my passion for design—it’s also a way for me to teach my children the value of hard work and creativity. By pursuing my dream and running a business, I’m showing them that success comes from determination and following what excites you. Setting this example for them gives them firsthand experience of what it means to build something from the ground up. They see the challenges, but they also see the joy of bringing ideas to life, which I hope will instill in them a strong work ethic and a belief in their own abilities.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
We specialize in interior design services, custom drapery, and a carefully curated selection of clean living, clean home, and beauty products. Right now, we’re focused on refining and expanding our retail offerings to better serve our customers.
I’m also excited to announce the launch of my first limited series of abstract art, which will debut at Fall 2024 Round Top at Blue Hills. What started as a personal hobby to enhance projects and the shop has unexpectedly garnered support from friends and clients, leading me to expand on it. This new collection is a reflection of that passion, and I’m thrilled to share it in a more formal way for the first time.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are adaptability, creativity, and persistence.
First, adaptability was key because life threw many curveballs—frequent moves, changes in direction, and starting my business later in life. Learning to adjust and find opportunities in any situation is essential. For those early in their journey, my advice is to embrace change, and don’t be afraid to pivot when things don’t go as planned. Each challenge brings new perspectives.
Second, creativity has always driven me. Whether it’s in designing a space or creating art, creativity is what fuels the excitement and passion behind what I do. To develop this skill, I encourage others to be curious—explore different mediums, styles, and influences. It’s not just about being artistic; it’s about finding creative solutions in all aspects of your work.
Finally, persistence has been critical. Building a business is not easy, and there were moments where things felt overwhelming. However, having the mindset to keep pushing, especially when things get tough, is what ultimately leads to success. My advice is simple: stay focused on your goals, even when progress feels slow. Consistency will pay off in the long run.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Like many small businesses, one of the biggest challenges I’m facing right now is navigating the current economic climate. Rising costs, supply chain disruptions, and shifts in consumer spending habits are affecting businesses across the board. It’s a tough time for small business owners because we often don’t have the same financial cushions or resources as larger companies, so every decision feels crucial.
To overcome this, I’m focusing on being resourceful and adaptable. We’re looking for ways to streamline our processes, reduce unnecessary costs, and make the most of the resources we have. I’ve also found it helpful to stay close to my customers and listen to their needs. By offering more personalized services, like custom drapery and design consultations, and focusing on unique, high-quality products, we can build stronger relationships and differentiate ourselves in a competitive market.
