We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robyn Ashley a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robyn , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Developing confidence and self-esteem is definitely a journey, and I believe it’s something that’s always in progress. For me, it starts with self-awareness—understanding what impacts me both positive and negatively is important. I make it a point to celebrate small wins and try to find a learning each time something doesn’t go as planned. Surrounding myself with supportive people also plays a crucial role; their encouragement can make a big difference.
Also, I try to step out of my comfort zone regularly, whether that’s taking on new challenges or engaging in activities that push my boundaries. Each time I face a fear or tackle a challenge, I gain a bit more confidence in what I’m doing.
Last but not least is ensuring I do things that are good for my heart—whether it’s spending time with loved ones, spending time in my passions, or practicing mindfulness. Self-care is essential for remaining positive and resilient, as it directly impacts my mindset. If my mindset is positive and level, its a lot easier to handle challenges and navigate difficulties. As soon as my mindset is in a downward space, these things become a lot harder and directly impact my confidence and self esteem.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hey everyone! I’m Robyn Ashley, a Canadian artist from Edmonton, AB, and I’m thrilled to share my musical journey with you. My music blends a wide variety of genres, which makes it really fun to create and perform. I call it ‘Sparkle Rock’ because it really incorporates influences from Country, Pop, Rock and even Musical Theatre.
What I love most about what I do is connecting with people through my songs and performances. Nothing feels better than having people smile and sing along while joining me in my music. My debut single, “Sweet Goodbye,” hit number 6 on the Canadian Indie Country Chart, and seeing people respond to it has been amazing. In 2024 so far, I have had two singles be released (Everything’s Changed and Chasing Red Lights). I have also spent a lot of time writing and creating. I’m excited to meet people and share stories through my voice/music. That is the real magic.
I have been extremely passionate about being a vocalist my whole life. I didn’t step into the Artist arena professionally until a few years back but its something I’ve done as long as I can remember. Making the decision to pursue music professionally has been the hardest but also most fulfilling decision I have made, I have recently been honored with three nominations at the 10th Annual Josie Awards in Nashville, which is such a milestone for me. I’m so grateful for all the support I’ve received and am excited for what lies ahead.
I’d love for you to join me on this journey! You can find me on social media @robynashleymusic.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, here are three qualities that have been (and continue to be) most impactful in my journey as an artist:
Resilience: The creative process is often filled with changes in direction, feeling lost or rejection. Resilience allows you to push through these challenges and stay committed to your vision.
Advice: Embrace feedback, both positive and constructive. Listen to those you respect and never compare yourself to others. Your journey is your own and you have your own path.
Authenticity: Staying true to your unique voice and vision is crucial,
Advice: Take time to explore what makes your perspective unique. Create art that resonates with you personally, rather than what you think others want to see. Trust your instincts and let your individuality shine through.
Determination: The drive to pursue your passion, even when faced with obstacles, is vital for growth and success as an artist.
Advice: Set clear goals for your artistic journey and stay committed to them, even when progress feels slow. Develop a routine that keeps you creating regularly, and remind yourself why you started in the first place.
For those early in their artistic journey, focus on developing these qualities through consistent practice and reflection. Surround yourself with a community of fellow artists who inspire and challenge you, and seek mentorship from those whose work you admire. Remember, every piece you create is a step forward, so keep exploring and expressing your unique voice!
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was instill a strong work ethic and help me cultivate strong interpersonal skills. From a young age, they emphasized the importance of dedication and perseverance, encouraging me to approach challenges with determination. I watched them display this in their life and it taught me that hard work leads to meaningful results.
Additionally, they placed great value on communication and relationships. They modeled how to listen actively, empathize with others, and navigate social situations with confidence. These skills have been invaluable in both my personal and professional life, allowing me to build strong connections and collaborate effectively with others.
Overall, their guidance in these areas has shaped who I am today and continues to influence my approach to life and work
