Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Purvis. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Jessica with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
Colossians 3:23-25 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” I want to do the work of my Father when I work, so it’s important to me to work hard and do things with integrity. Working these days can be hard and it’s all about the rat race, but I am focused on doing something meaningful and helpful to others. For me, it’s not about working a lot, but it’s about purposeful work.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a children’s book author based in the DFW area. I have been an educator for the last eight years and decided to take a break to really focus on my family, health, and finishing my book “You Are Seen.” I’d been writing my book off and on for a year and didn’t know what direction to go in. Once I left teaching, my mind became clear and the version I published came to life! What’s most special to me about writing this short book is that it’s a reflection of the love I have for my children (the main character is my oldest daughter)…it’s also exciting to think about what may be next in line for my writing career. It’s possible I will enter into the world of education again one day but, for now, I am enjoying this creative space I have been in for the past months. Currently, my book is available on Amazon for purchase and I post when I have local events on my website — www.jpurvisbooks.com
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most impactful things in my journey that have propelled me are the support of my husband, my love for writing, and the encouragement of my mother. My husband knew I was writing and encouraged me to keep going, but he also supported me in leaving my career. He knew that I could do it and was there to push me, along with my mom who has always been a driving force and supporter for me. If you’re early in your journey, don’t give up on your dreams. Continue to work on what’s important to you and develop your skills, and be open to feedback from others. The people who believe in you will get you to where you want to be, but you have to put the work in on your end, as well.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I am looking to partner with local book stores, book festivals, and other local children’s book writers. It can be hard to find events to be a part of to sell my book in person and I love to be able to see who’s buying my book and have conversations with them.
