Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jess Wilson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jess, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
I practice self-care in a couple of different ways. I have hobbies that bring me joy such as my house plants, which I have 62 of now at the time of writing this. I take a rest week to reset every month. Have a very set schedule that I stick to that all allows me space to be able to rest when I need to and take care of myself first. I am very basic of myself for practices, it can look like taking naps as needed, hot showers, bubble baths, eating, good food, etc..
The effectiveness of prioritizing self-care in both my business and personal life is that it allows me to show up at 100% when and where I need to. It’s kind of like that whole analogy of if you’re on the plane and it’s crashing you need to put your oxygen mask on first before you can help anybody else. In my world, I have to prioritize self-care first to be able to show up and help anyone else.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
So hi, my name is Jess and I am a remote photographer. I’ve had a professional photography business for over 20+ years now. In 2021 due to Covid and my personal journey with thyroid cancer, I pivot in my business from in person to remote services . This allowed me to be able to continue doing what I loved, but in a way that helped me prioritize my health and family.
What’s really awesome about remote photography Is that the way I offer it provides an stress-free fun affordable way to take business pictures. In a nutshell, I take over the camera on your device and take your pictures from your location. It’s a way to work with a professional photographer from the comfort of your safe space! It saves you time and money and stress when it comes to getting pictures done.
I specialize in Headshots and branding photography services for the busy Solopreneurs. I offer a few options and packages that are based on your budgets and what kind of pictures that you need for your projects.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Being a good communicator and making sure that the customer experience is top-notch
2. Always being open to continuing education in my field. Finding classes other options to always be learning something more.
3. Being solid on my Y and making sure that the systems that I implement for that, why are aligned with how I want to do things for my business.
For those early on in their journey, I think it’s important that they practice, good communication, and making sure that the customer experiences top-notch because sometimes things happen, but if those two things are at the top of the chain, it eliminates miscommunications and issues coming up. But if they still do then, it’s easy to find ways to implement fixing them. This is what brings customers back over and over again and also helps earn you a good reputation for being a solid business person who is honest and empathetic in what you’re doing.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I personally love the go giver series by Bob Berg. There are five books in the series and they are short easy reads. They use parables to give examples on how to live a life, both personal and business based on being heart, focused and service based.
