Meet Michael Hershey

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Michael Hershey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Michael , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

Growing up I had poor food habits. I was overweight, unhappy and unhealthy. I knew I needed to make changes for myself. I had a 60 lb weight loss journey and I fell in love with nutrition and health. Since then I’ve become a Registered Dietitian, started my own business and now I help people with something I once struggled so much with!

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I help clients with weight loss, blood sugar control, cholesterol, blood pressure and a variety of other nutrition related conditions! Most people don’t know that they can work with a Registered Dietitian at no cost to them by using preventative health benefits. In 2023, 94% of my clients paid $0 out of pocket to work with me 1:1. Through this business model I’ve been able to increase access to affordable care. I understand the challenges that come along with nutrition and health – through my own personal experiences I can relate to those challenges and help clients over come and transform their life.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The most impactful quality has been the ability to connect with people and build rapport. Your clients have to genuinely trust you and you can gain this trust by being transparent and keeping the clients best interest in mind at all times. In the beginning of starting my business the most helpful quality was optimism – if you have a dream or goal, you have to first believe that it can happen. Another trait has been the ability to learn and adapt. For any successful business you need to be ready to pivot, keep an open mind and be continuously learning.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

My business coach, Amy Plano, The Reimbursement Dietitian has helped me to create a lucrative and sustainable business where I can impact lives in a positive way! Find mentorship in someone who has done what you are trying to do and learn as much as you can!
