Meet Jamie Causey

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamie Causey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Jamie, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
I don’t know if I’m supposed to be this candid, but I say “no” more. I decline projects or invitations that over extend me, or take my energy without nourishing it.

I’m that crazy plant/dog lady whose house is bouncing with boxers and covered in (some of them a lil thirsty right now) plants. The dogs always make me smile, and the plants are comforting. Our fairy lights and LED candles are on a timer, so at night our house is very quiet and calm.

Making those choices has allowed me (and my family!) to have a home and space where we are all super comfortable and calm, which is a huge help keeping our social batteries charged.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I guess the short answer is that I do hair.

The long answer is that I’m a hairstylist in Fort Worth, and I specialize in blonde and fantasy color hair.

These appointments can be long, so I try to make sure my clients feel like they’re having down time, being pampered, and are able to really just sit back and enjoy the process.

Recently, I switched suites at the salon I work in, and I’ve just completely redecorated and gone a whole new direction with the room so it’s been super fun showing that off to my new clients and my established ones!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Gosh. Narrowing it to three.

Okay.

First – public speaking. I’m generally okay speaking in front of crowds, and that’s really helped with the one on one consultations and interactions. My mom started attending Toastmasters meetings when I was around 13, and she often took me with her. I’d sit in the corner reading a book while listening to the club discuss speech and communication tools and how to improve. Avoiding filler language and vocal fry have been SUPER useful in the salon environment.

Second – interview skills. Meeting someone for the first time for a consultation can be stressful for everyone, but asking the right questions (interviewing) keeps the appointment on track AND helps better understand the client’s goals. Lifestyle, environment, budget, history, maintenance…being able to ask the questions to determine the best approach…building that relationship while sipping coffee and getting to know one another is essential.

Finally – I know my capabilities, and I know my limitations. I know my lane, I know my skill set. I can articulate what I can do, what I want to do, and what doesn’t fit with me. Vibe attracts tribe, so I think it’s important to cultivate the energy I seek.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
They broke the cycle of poverty for my siblings and me. They also broke the cycle of violence – which is HUGE – but man. Somehow my mom and dad clawed their way out of sharecropping, dirt floors, etc., just true impoverishment, with no assistance. They were incredibly resourceful, resilient, and obviously very determined that we would have better than they did.
