We recently connected with Mark Hemstock and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mark, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience is often a quality built through a combination of personal experiences, values, and the environments we navigate. For me, resilience stems from the path I’ve walked both as an individual and as a business owner. Growing up, I learned early on that challenges were a part of life. The ability to adapt, push forward, and maintain optimism in the face of adversity shaped my approach to both personal and professional endeavors. My family instilled in me a strong work ethic and the belief that perseverance is the key to success, and these lessons continue to be the backbone of my resilience today.
As the owner of Hemstock Films in Calgary, Alberta, I’ve faced a fair share of hurdles—whether it’s navigating the fast-evolving landscape of video production, managing the day-to-day operations of the company, or simply riding out the natural highs and lows that come with running a business. Each challenge has required me to dig deep, remain flexible, and maintain a clear vision. What keeps me resilient is knowing that setbacks aren’t failures but opportunities to learn and grow. It’s this mindset that helps me get back up when things don’t go as planned.
Another source of my resilience comes from the passion I have for storytelling and the creative process. I founded Hemstock Films because I believe in the power of video to capture and share compelling narratives. The drive to bring these stories to life fuels me, even in tough times. Knowing that I’m not just running a business, but also creating meaningful work that resonates with people, gives me the strength to keep going, no matter the obstacles.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
At Hemstock Films, my focus is on delivering high-quality video production that captures the essence of every project. Based in Calgary, Alberta, my company specializes in corporate video production, documentary production, director of photography (DOP) services, music video production, and commercial production. With over 19 years of experience as a director of photography and producer, I bring both technical expertise and creative vision to every shoot, ensuring that each project I work on stands out for its professionalism and visual impact.
For me, corporate video production is about helping businesses tell their stories in a way that connects with their audience. I work closely with companies to create videos that are not only engaging but also deliver their message with clarity and impact. On the documentary side, I love diving deep into real-life stories and producing films that have meaning and resonance. My DOP services are available to bring a professional, cinematic eye to any project, and with my years of experience, I ensure every frame is visually compelling. When it comes to music video production, I collaborate with artists to bring their vision to life, blending their sound with striking visuals. My team and I also create commercials that help brands make a strong impression with their target audience.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Throughout my journey as the owner of Hemstock Films in Calgary, Alberta, three key skills and areas of knowledge have been instrumental in both my success as a business owner and in my role as a director of photography. These are storytelling, technical expertise, and client management. Each of these skills has shaped not only the way I approach video production but also how I’ve built and sustained a successful business over the years.
The first, and perhaps most important, is storytelling. Whether I’m producing a corporate video, a documentary, or a music video, the ability to craft a compelling narrative is at the heart of what we do at Hemstock Films. For anyone starting out in this field, my advice is to immerse yourself in stories. Watch films, read books, and learn from the great storytellers around you. The more you understand the structure and flow of storytelling, the better you’ll be able to convey your clients’ messages in a powerful way.
Another essential skill that’s been pivotal to my success is technical expertise. As a director of photography with over 19 years of experience, having a deep understanding of cameras, lighting, and editing is crucial. Mastering these technical elements allows me to bring my creative visions to life while ensuring the highest quality standards. For those starting out, I recommend spending time learning the tools of the trade—whether it’s through formal education, online tutorials, or simply hands-on experience. The more comfortable and proficient you are with the technology, the more freedom you’ll have to experiment and push boundaries in your projects.
Lastly, client management has been an invaluable skill for running a successful video production business. At Hemstock Films, I’ve learned that clear communication, reliability, and understanding a client’s vision are key to building strong, lasting relationships. For those new to business, my advice is to focus on developing strong interpersonal skills. Listen closely to your clients, be responsive, and always strive to exceed their expectations. The better you are at managing client relationships, the more trust and credibility you’ll build over time.
For those just starting out on their own journey, focus on honing these three areas—storytelling, technical expertise, and client management. They’ll form the foundation for your success, whether you’re working as a director of photography in Calgary or starting your own business in the video production industry.
