Meet Aaron Mirsky

We were lucky to catch up with Aaron Mirsky recently and have shared our conversation below.

Aaron, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?

Self-discipline is crucial when launching a business, particularly in the first 12 months. It’s not about restriction but a conscious decision rooted in understanding priorities, committing to goals, and aligning actions with values.

I keep a clear vision for my future and a strong commitment to my purpose, which guide my decision-making. They help me focus on the bigger picture and avoid getting sidetracked by immediate gratification. Patience, perseverance, resilience, and belief in timing are crucial. My meticulously organized agenda acts as a roadmap, ensuring that I prioritize tasks and manage my time effectively.

Mindfulness helps me stay grounded and aware of my internal state, enabling me to avoid distractions and impulsive decisions. I also acknowledge my own limits, knowing when to push myself and when to take a break to prevent burnout.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

It’s wonderful to have this opportunity to share about my role as Co-founder of Protected Roots Integrative Treatment Center in San Diego!

At Protected Roots, we’re passionate about providing comprehensive and compassionate mental health care to adolescents, young adults, and their families by offering Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), and Outpatient Programs (OP). We believe in a holistic approach that integrates evidence-based therapies with a deep understanding of individual needs and cultural backgrounds. Our goal is to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals can heal, grow, and thrive.

What excites me most about this work is witnessing the transformative power of connection and healing. We see individuals come to us struggling with a wide range of challenges, from anxiety and depression to different traumas. It’s incredibly rewarding to be a part of their journey towards recovery and to witness them reclaim their lives.

One of the things that sets Protected Roots apart is our commitment to cultural sensitivity and inclusivity. We recognize that mental health is deeply intertwined with cultural identity and strive to create a space where everyone feels seen, heard, and understood. We also believe in empowering families to be active participants in the healing process, recognizing that strong family support is crucial for sustained recovery.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back on my journey as a Co-founder of Protected Roots, several elements have been crucial to our success, but three stand out as particularly impactful.

First and foremost is empathy and compassion. Truly understanding the struggles of our clients and meeting them with genuine empathy has been fundamental in building trust and creating a safe space for healing. It’s not just about being sympathetic but actively listening, validating their emotions, and demonstrating genuine care for their well-being. This allows us to tailor our approach to their unique needs and fosters a strong therapeutic relationship.

Secondly, collaboration and teamwork have been essential. Building a strong team of dedicated professionals with diverse expertise has allowed us to provide comprehensive care that addresses the multifaceted nature of mental health. We foster a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their unique skills, creating a truly supportive and enriching atmosphere for both clients and staff.

Thirdly, adaptability and resilience have been crucial in the ever-evolving mental health landscape. The diverse and constantly changing needs of our clients require us to be flexible and open to new approaches. As a for-profit organization navigating the field, we do not depend on grants to operate the company. Instead, we seek to create a self-sustainable business. This also includes having the resilience to face the challenges and setbacks of working in this field. Maintaining a growth mindset and learning from every experience has allowed us to stay relevant and provide effective care.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

This past year, I focused on strengthening Protected Roots’ business foundation, which is essential for ensuring our long-term sustainability and ability to provide high-quality mental health care.

We carefully analyzed our current offerings and identified areas where we could expand our services to better meet the needs of our community. This led to the development of new programs, such as a specialized program (ADHD) for children (10 -13 years old) and the PHP program.

We strengthened our relationships with community partners, specific referral sources, and other health organizations and systems. This collaborative approach broadened our reach and ensured that individuals seeking support could easily access our services.
