Meet Carey Lundin

We recently connected with Carey Lundin and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Carey, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

Confidence and self-esteem come from experience and the wisdom to trust your gut. I learned at the knee of my father, he was a tiny Jewish man from Brooklyn, who could enter any room and win it over with great stories and an open heart. Back in the early 1970s, he was hired by a company called Taylor Chain in Gary Indiana. They were on strike. It was his job to help bring the management and the labor together. I later discovered that he was featured in a documentary by Kartemquin (Hoop Dreams). His confidence and self-esteem came from listening and negotiating. And I believe that’s what I learned from him. Don’t be afraid, listen, verify, and be fair.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

My company is called Viva Lundin Productions. We have experience in almost every facet of content production from documentary films to TV series to social media series to corporate films and advertising. I was the Creative Director for a political media firm in Chicago for 10 years.

I only work on projects that intend to make the world more livable and equitable. I’m very excited about two of my three projects: the social media series Citizen Kate about a novice on the presidential campaign trail @RealCitizenKate; Metamorphosis, an immersive climate storytelling project with a mobile app designed to create tangible impact in the physical world; and a new film on Jens Jensen, who pioneered social activism to save parks at the turn of the last century, by designing with native plants.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

All life is about change and transformation: expect technology to get ahead of you, expect the economy to change where you may need to live, and expect people in your life to decide they want to do things differently and shake up things. My skills come from tenacity, diplomacy, and the ability to go where the market is. I started at public television, then became a field producer for Unsolved Mysteries, then moved into corporate media, then into political advertising, and then back to narrative projects. But what this tells you is that as the market changed, so did I. And I have to say I’m very proud of my career and have never ever felt stuck. To be successful, go with the flow.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

Back to my earlier comment about going with the flow. Sometimes the flow is scary because there are skills there that haven’t been developed. But when you are open-minded about how you can use your skills, you can learn so much more, because you want to and you may need to, And before you know it, you’re an expert, and the world is so much more open. Don’t be afraid to fail. It is only through failure that we can achieve success.
