Meet Denise Robinson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Denise Robinson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Denise, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

As a Black woman and nurse practitioner running a successful med spa, I’ve faced the challenge of often being the only one in the room who looks like me. Here’s how I learned to navigate and thrive in those situations:

Embracing My Unique Perspective
I realized early on that my background gives me a distinctive viewpoint. I use my experiences to inform my practice, emphasizing the importance of cultural competency in patient care. This has allowed me to connect with clients on a deeper level, building trust and loyalty.

Building Confidence
I invested time in developing my skills and knowledge. I pursued advanced training in aesthetics and business management, ensuring that I could speak confidently about my expertise. This preparation helped me assert my authority in meetings, regardless of the demographics around me.

Networking and Finding Allies
I sought out mentors and created a network of fellow entrepreneurs and professionals who supported me. These connections provided encouragement and opened doors, helping me feel less isolated in predominantly white spaces.

Advocacy and Representation
In meetings and industry events, I advocate for diversity and inclusion. I share insights about the importance of representation in healthcare, pushing for initiatives that address disparities. My voice has become a catalyst for change, encouraging others to recognize the value of diverse perspectives.

Resilience and Adaptability
I’ve learned to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Each setback has taught me valuable lessons about adaptability and persistence. When I encounter skepticism or bias, I focus on my mission: providing quality care and promoting wellness for all clients.

Creating an Inclusive Space
In my med spa, I prioritize creating an inclusive environment. I ensure that my staff reflects the diversity of our community, fostering a welcoming atmosphere for clients from all backgrounds. This approach not only enhances patient experiences but also encourages open dialogue about beauty and wellness.

Celebrating Success
Finally, I celebrate my achievements and those of my peers. By uplifting others and sharing our stories, I help pave the way for future generations of Black women in healthcare and entrepreneurship.

Through these experiences, I’ve learned that being the only one in the room can be a powerful position. It has pushed me to grow, advocate, and lead with authenticity, ultimately transforming challenges into opportunities for success.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back on my journey from a nurse to a family nurse practitioner and now an aesthetic business owner, three qualities have been particularly impactful:

1. Empathy
Empathy has been crucial in my nursing practice and aesthetic business. Understanding patients’ feelings and concerns helps build trust and enhances care quality.

Advice: Actively listen to your patients. Take time to understand their needs and emotions. Practice putting yourself in their shoes to improve your communication skills and foster deeper connections.

2. Continuous Learning
The medical field is ever-evolving, especially in aesthetics. Staying informed about the latest treatments and technologies has allowed me to provide the best care possible.

Advice: Commit to lifelong learning. Attend workshops, seminars, and online courses. Join professional organizations and seek mentorship from experienced practitioners to broaden your knowledge and skills.

3. Entrepreneurial Mindset
Transitioning to an aesthetic business required not only clinical skills but also business acumen. Understanding marketing, finance, and operations has been essential for success.

Advice: Develop a solid understanding of business fundamentals. Consider taking courses in entrepreneurship or small business management. Networking with other entrepreneurs can also provide valuable insights and support.

Final Thoughts
For those early in their journey, embrace challenges as learning opportunities. Build relationships, seek mentorship, and remain adaptable. Your unique experiences will shape your path, so leverage them to grow both personally and professionally.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

One of my biggest challenges has been raising awareness about my med spa and ensuring that potential clients know we exist. To tackle this, I’ve turned to professional marketing and advertising assistance to effectively promote our services.

Strategies I’m Implementing:
Targeted Advertising: Utilizing social media platforms and local advertising, I’m focusing on reaching the demographics most likely to benefit from our services. This targeted approach helps ensure my messages resonate with the right audience.
Engaging Content: Creating informative and engaging content—like blog posts, videos, and social media updates—highlights our treatments and their benefits. This not only informs potential clients but also establishes my expertise.
Community Engagement: I’m actively participating in community events and health fairs to connect with local residents. This face-to-face interaction fosters trust and allows me to showcase our services directly.
Referral Programs: Implementing referral programs incentivizes existing clients to spread the word about our med spa, leveraging word-of-mouth marketing.
Partnerships: Collaborating with local businesses and influencers can amplify our reach. By building partnerships, we can tap into their audiences and increase visibility.
With professional marketing assistance, I’m excited to continue spreading the word about my business and getting more people to book appointments. Awareness is key, and I’m committed to ensuring our community knows about the exceptional services we offer.
