Meet Matthew Toman

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Matthew Toman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Matthew below.

Matthew , so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?

I did not always have self discipline, I used to over eat the wrong foods, drink a lot of alcohol and much more. I had to teach myself self-discipline after hitting rock bottom in the housing crash in 2010 and loosing everything. I knew at that point I no longer wanted to life the life I was living and was forced to rebuild to what it is today. I had no other choice but to redefine what success meant to me. Every day I have a choice to make, does this opportunity or decision I have to make bring me closer to my goals or further away. I will be 8 years sober in October 2024 and now live a life finically free and travel full time exploring the world while running my companies.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Currently, I own Bankhouse Productions, a film production company, and Bankhouse Media, a digital media agency.

When the crash happened in 2010, I found myself losing everything and joining the unemployment line, somewhere I never thought I would end up. I left school at 16, bought my first house at 19, and was working towards my goal of becoming a millionaire before the age of 30. Three weeks before my 30th birthday, I signed everything I owned over to the banks and ended up at rock bottom, the lowest point in my life.

Knowing I did not want to go back to being a landlord or working in my 9 to 5 as a refrigeration engineer, I decided to take this opportunity to try something new, so I joined an acting class.

I was cast in a feature film quite early in my acting career and quickly discovered that I wasn’t as good as I had hoped to be. It wasn’t something I wanted to pursue, but I also learned how much I loved the atmosphere and work behind the camera, which led me to navigate my career into film production.

Around this time in 2012, audiobooks were starting to become popular. As I grew up with severe dyslexia, I felt like my education was just beginning. I became interested in everything digital: marketing, mindset, film production, and anything that would move me forward. In 2014, I opened Bankhouse Productions, which went on to become an award-winning film production company. In 2018, I opened Bankhouse Media, a digital media agency that has served thousands of clients, offering services like websites, sales funnels, lead generation, SEO, and video production. We have a team of 14 currently scattered across the world, taking brands to the next level online.

I also created the Mindset and Marketing Academy, an online education platform teaching people how to build and scale businesses online.

I produced and starred in the movie “The Evolution of Success,” featuring Jack Canfield, who wrote “Chicken Soup for the Soul” and was featured in “The Secret,” Joe Vitale, Bob Doyle, who was also featured in “The Secret,” Natalie Ledwell, and 14 other world-leading mindset experts.

My most recent documentary, “The Overnight Entrepreneur,” features 45 of the world’s leading digital marketers, including Alex Hormozi, Mark Ford, Alex Cattoni, Jay Abraham, and many more. We are using this platform and audience to show how to achieve all of their digital goals faster using AI.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three most important qualities I have learned to bring me to where I am today are:

Resilience: Overcoming the financial crash in 2010 and bouncing back from such a low point in my life has taught me the importance of resilience. Turning a challenging situation into an opportunity for growth and reinvention has been a cornerstone of my journey. Today as a multiple business owner and dealing with the challenges that brings the lessons I learned and the tools I acquired I use on a daily basis.

Adaptability: Transitioning from a refrigeration engineer to an actor, and then to a film producer and digital media entrepreneur, has shown me the value of adaptability. Embracing change and learning new skills has been crucial to my success in various industries. I wear many different hats at different times of the day, you do not need to niche down into one thing, you can have multiple ideas, businesses and revenue streams but you must become adaptable.

Continuous Learning: Despite facing challenges like severe dyslexia, I have pursued continuous learning through audiobooks, online education, and industry knowledge. This dedication to self-improvement and staying updated with the latest trends has helped me stay ahead in my field. To think I left school at 16 and never wanted to look back to now having an online learning platform myself and students going though my own school is mind blowing to me.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

It is so important to have a mentor or coach. I have now become a mentor myself but still have my own mentor on hand.

There are too many people to mention who have helped me along the way, as I have become really good at dropping my ego and asking for help.

The standout people who have helped me on my journey are Steve G. Jones, Ed.D., a clinical hypnotherapist who has been practicing hypnotherapy since the 1980s and the author of over 22 books on hypnotherapy. He is my mentor and dear friend.

My business partner, Daniel F. Holmes, an award-winning writer, director, entrepreneur, and also dear friend, has been instrumental in my journey.

And myself—I had to take responsibility for all the bad things that happened in my life and ensure they did not happen again. I taught myself everything I could about mindset, marketing, and becoming the best coach, friend, and business partner. I have strived to help as many people as I could while also prioritizing myself.

I am a big believer in the ripple effect, and while my mentors have helped thousands of people, I took inspiration from this and have done the same with my movies, documentaries, and companies.
